The first impression matters, and your professional wardrobe plays a big part in the first impression you make of yourself. Just because you work in a professional environment, that doesn't mean you should look obvious. Here are some guidelines to look good but not "too" good.
Steps
Step 1. Dress according to the work tasks you need to do
If you are dealing with customers you will need to be flawless to make a good impression. If you work in a casual business, have a back office or your job gets you dirty, you will have more room to maneuver than clothing.
- Pay attention to how your colleagues dress and use that to set your standard. Try to dress up on their level, or just a little prettier
- If your job leads you to have contact with customers but also includes activities that require more moderate clothing, it is best that you use a casual style, bringing a change or a few items to add with you. and (for men) a tie to match a plain shirt.
Step 2. Wear clothes that "fit you"
You don't have to wear an S to look good but you "have to" wear clothes that fit you properly.
- Don't wear anything too tight. If your pants have wrinkles on the thighs or waist, they are too tight. If you can't cross your arms without the sleeves baring your wrists, the shirt is too small. Also, if the buttons open it means, once again, that your shirt is too tight.
- Don't wear something too loose either. Choose clothes that fit you well without looking baggy or saggy. If necessary, shorten the trouser hem and sleeves.
Step 3. Use a simple hairstyle and makeup
- You will save time. Try not to take more than 30 minutes to do your hair and makeup in the morning.
- You will avoid looking excessive. Have you ever noticed those people who use so much hairspray that it looks like their hair can break if it falls out? Find the right balance between proper self-care and over-caring.
Step 4. Emphasize the positives
If you have great legs, wear a skirt. Just make sure it's the proper length (no more than 5cm above the knee). Do you have a great body? Wear a nice pair of pants with a perfect crease.
Step 5. Be simple
A V-neck sweater or tunic is fine, but don't wear skirts that are too short, or necklines that are too deep or anything sheer or too tight.
Step 6. Polish your shoes
It may look old-fashioned, but a coat of polishing wax will keep them looking good for longer. It will make them immune to water and cover scratches.
Advice
- Count to eight. Give a point to all the clothes and accessories you are wearing. Give two points to anything that is bright, flamboyant or decorated. Try to find eight points, including shoes.
- Don't have a lot of money to spend on clothes? Okay - keep it simple. The classic never goes out of style. Having a few pairs of trousers (black, dark, brown, pinstriped), a few top pieces and a few classic shirts is fine. Then in each season you can add just a garment or two, a few accessories or shoes and your wardrobe will be ready.
- Be aware that you are perfect! There is nothing more attractive than a person who feels confident, comfortable and smiling.
- Try to find a balance between the classic and the modern.
