Layered haircuts are easy to maintain and versatile. Learning how to cut your layered hair can help you save money on the hairdresser. You should practice on a demonstration hair model first before cutting someone's hair. Follow these guidelines for cutting your hair into neat layers.
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Hair Preparation
Step 1. Wash your hair with shampoo
If you are cutting someone else's hair, you can ask the person to take a shower right before cutting their hair.
Step 2. Apply conditioner to your hair
Most hair will become less tangled after applying a conditioner, making it easier to cut.
Step 3. Blot excess water from your hair with a towel
You can wrap the towel around your head or pat sections of your hair with the towel.
Step 4. Have a sharp pair of hairdressing scissors, a spray bottle filled with water, and styling products handy
Put an apron on the shoulders of the person whose hair you cut.
Part 2 of 4: Splitting the Hair
Step 1. Comb your hair thoroughly with a wide toothed comb
Follow with a fine-toothed comb.
Step 2. First comb the hair back from the forehead
Step 3. Discuss the queue with your client
As much as it is easier to create symmetry, many people queue to one side.
Step 4. Think of the hair as being in 3 separate areas, or halos
These sections of hair will need to be cut each to a different length. Experiment where you want them to go before you start cutting.
The first halo is a circle above the top of your head. The second halo is a circle that starts in front of your head, goes around the tips of your ears and comes to the other side at the same level. The third section is the lower part of the hair behind the ears and at the bottom
Step 5. Divide the hair from the middle row to the top towards the center of the body line
You will divide each of your "halos" into right and left sections for easier cutting.
Step 6. Tie 3 sections of hair, 1 for each halo, on each side of the head
Secure them with a large paper clip. You can buy them in most beauty shops.
Step 7. Separate the remaining sections of hair further as you go
For thick hair, you will want to remove your first clip, separate 2 sections of hair, and cut the first part.
Part 3 of 4: Hair Cutting
Step 1. Choose how much you would like to cut off the lower sections of hair
This will be your longest layer, so keep in mind that each layer towards the top will need to be cut more drastically.
For example, if you have split ends, you may want to cut 1 to 2 inches (2,5 - 5cm). Then, the remaining layers can be cut another 2 or 4 inches (5 - 10cm), depending on the length of the hair, the current layers and how drastic you want the scaling to be
Step 2. Untie the lower section of the halo
Comb your hair with a fine-toothed comb, keeping the end of the strand between your index and middle fingers. Use scissors to cut horizontally along the bottom.
Step 3. Cut the remaining sections of the lower halo in a similar fashion
You can move along the bottom left and right, removing the pliers from the areas that will be your bottom layer.
Step 4. Comb and compare the hair to make sure it is cut neatly
Cut any section that looks longer.
Part 4 of 4: Scaling the Face Frame
Step 1. Move to the front of your hair, in the middle of the middle row
You will choose the next two layers depending on how they frame your face.
Step 2. Comb the hair from each side of the head, depending on your row
Pull it down with your thumb and forefinger to guess where you want the shortest point to frame your face.
If your hair is drying, splash some water from the spray bottle before continuing
Step 3. Brush the top of the hair in front of your face
Cut them to the length you want, or just below with several horizontal scissor cuts.
Step 4. Comb the hair along the part again
Return to the layer on the right side. Cut at a 45 degree angle on the front section of the hair.
A sharper angle will create a more drastic layered face frame. A softer corner will create thin layers around your face
Step 5. Remove the clothespin from the second halo on one side
This is the portion above your ear and forward. Choose the length of your second layer.
Step 6. Brush it away from your head and cut the middle layer horizontally
Step 7. Work around the head, removing the middle halo pliers and cutting them to length first
Step 8. Return to the top layer of pliers, cutting according to the height of the layer that frames your face lower
Step 9. Wet your hair as needed
Comb your hair when you think you have cut the three halos in three different steps.
If you think you don't remember how long a layer should be, go back to the first few cuts you made and see where they fall on your head. Cut the remaining layers depending on where they should fall in a similar fashion
Step 10. Apply styling cream or mousse to your hair
Style them according to your preference.
Advice
- When measuring the 3 layers, remember that the shorter the hair, the smaller the difference between the layers should be. The 3 layers will differ by 2-4 inches on long hair and half an inch on short hair.
- Before you cut someone's hair, you can buy a demonstration hair model from a local cosmetic supply store. Try cutting slightly hinted, more noticeable layers and layers in medium and short lengths before working on someone's real hair.
