Woodworm is a type of infestation that can damage furniture and other wooden items. While it is particularly destructive to different types of softwoods, it can also destroy items made from various types of hardwood. Treating wooden objects in advance can minimize the chances of an infestation, and help limit damage if the woodworm is already present.
Steps
Step 1. Observe if you detect the presence of the woodworm
You can easily notice this by checking the surface of the wood itself. Woodworm is distinguished by a series of small holes in the surface of the wood, which resemble a series of small pinpricks. Be sure to inspect the entire surface, as the condition can affect even a small area.
Step 2. Determine the extent of the damage
In many cases, the woodworm is found in the top layer of the wood, leaving the heart and surrounding layers intact. When this is the case, the structure of the wood is still relatively strong and the furniture or object can be recovered. If the wood tends to crumble or break easily when you handle it, it means that, even with a treatment, there isn't much hope of saving it.
Step 3. Put on suitable clothing for the treatment
There are several liquid products on the market that are used as woodworm treatments. All contain chemicals that, when inhaled, can produce fumes that cause disease or some type of adverse reaction. Before working with the solution, take the time to put on a face mask, a pair of goggles and gloves. This minimizes skin and eye exposure, as well as prevents inhalation of the gases emitted during the process.
Step 4. Prepare the treatment solution
Many of the woodworm products are concentrated. This makes it necessary to mix the product with a certain amount of water. Read the instructions carefully to determine if it should be used pure or if it should be diluted in water.
Step 5. Pour the prepared product into a garden sprayer
A simple spray pump is fine. Before starting the treatment, make sure the sprayer is well sealed to avoid accidental spillage of the solution.
Step 6. Cover the surface of the damaged wood
Apply an even coat to kill any infestation present and prevent any further damage to the wood surface. Let the applied layer dry before moving the wood. In this way the solution is completely absorbed and accelerates the elimination of the woodworm.
