Striped squirrels are cute fur balls - until they start chewing on your yard and lawn. Fortunately, you can get rid of them by using many traps, or you can keep them away with natural methods. This article will help you solve your striped squirrel problem once and for all.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Using Traps
Step 1. Purchase an animal trap
Sprinkle sunflower seeds or peanuts around the trap to attract squirrels. Then, remove the striped squirrels from the trap according to local laws.
Step 2. Place a half-full bucket of water outdoors
Lay a plank of wood against the side of the bucket.
- Sprinkle some sunflower seeds on the table, in the water and in the grass around the bucket. The striped squirrel will walk on the table to eat the seeds, fall into the bucket and drown.
- Learn about local animal control laws to find out how to dispose of the bodies of striped squirrels. Always wear gloves when handling dead animals, and always wash your hands after doing so. In many cases they will be infested with fleas, ticks or other unpleasant parasites.
Step 3. Place a mousetrap to catch squirrels
Spread a mix of peanut butter and oatmeal on the trap. While this method will kill the squirrels, it will be quick and not painful. Again, comply with carcass disposal laws.
Method 2 of 3: Use Natural Methods
Step 1. Spread some mothballs
Place mothballs around the foundation of the house, near the plants and around the holes dug by squirrels. Mothballs won't kill squirrels, but it will push rodents away from the garden perimeter.
Step 2. Put out objects that give off odors that squirrels don't like
Try pouring blood meal around the plant roots. You can also place non-chewed gum near squirrels' holes.
Step 3. Let your pets stay outdoors
Keeping your dog or cat in the garden will often be enough to scare away squirrels.
Step 4. Spray pepper spray or hot sauce on the surface of the plants
Alternatively, you can sprinkle cayenne pepper on your plants. Doing this will prevent the striped squirrels from chewing on your plants.
Method 3 of 3: If a Squirrel Enter Your House
Step 1. Open doors and windows to the outside to give the squirrel a chance to escape
At the same time, close all doors and entrances to the innermost rooms so that the squirrel can only escape to the outside.
Step 2. Lean a plank or other flat object against the sill of your open windows
A board will give the squirrel something to climb to escape the window.
Step 3. Grab a blanket and use it to guide the squirrel to the door
If the squirrel climbs on the blanket, don't panic. Gently roll up the blanket, take it outside and drop the squirrel.
Step 4. Call a professional to take care of the dead squirrels
If a squirrel has entered your attic or inside the walls of your house and is dead, let a professional take care of the problem.
Advice
- If squirrels dig up plant bulbs, plant the bulbs in cages of 2.5 x 2.5 cm to keep rodents away.
- Call an exterminator or animal control. If none of these methods worked, ask an expert for help to fix the problem.
- Your children may be upset if they see a dead squirrel in a bucket of water or in a mousetrap. Respect their feelings and throw away animal corpses when your kids can't see them.
Warnings
- Never put the bucket of water in a place that is accessible to small children. Small children could fall into the bucket and drown, even in a little water.
- Make sure it is legal in your state to capture or eliminate these animals.
