Alfalfa sprouts grow quickly, sprouting in just 3-5 days. You can grow them in a glass jar and only 1 tablespoon of seeds is needed to get 350ml of sprouts. These nutritious sprouts are rich in antioxidants and are great when added to salads and sandwiches. Here's how to grow alfalfa sprouts.
Steps
Step 1. Purchase alfalfa seeds from health food stores, grocery stores, or online seed distributors
You can also find organic seeds. The seeds are found in small packages between 220-440g and in large 0.5kg bags.
Step 2. Wash and arrange the seeds
Eliminate any seeds that are broken or that look bad.
Step 3. Measure 1 tablespoon of seeds
Store the rest in the original bag, or one with an airtight seal, or in a plastic container.
Step 4. Place the alfalfa seeds in a one liter glass jar
Containers that have flat sides work best because you can place the seeds on the sides to allow for better air circulation.
Step 5. Fill the jar halfway with warm water
This way you completely cover the seeds.
Step 6. Put a clean gauze or pantyhose on the opening of the jar
So you are sure that the seeds remain in the jar when you empty it from the water. Secure the cover with a rubber band.
Step 7. Soak alfalfa seeds for at least 12 hours
Step 8. Drain the water
Leave the gauze or pantyhose on the opening of the vase. Flip it over the sink.
Step 9. Rinse and drain the seeds again
Step 10. Place the vase on its side in a dark place
It is a good idea to place it in a cabinet or pantry that ensures a warm and comfortable temperature. Make sure the seeds are scattered.
Step 11. Take the jar 2-3 times a day to rinse the alfalfa seeds
Rinse them with warm water, draining them completely each time. Do this for 3 to 4 days, or until the seeds sprout and reach a length of 2.5-10cm.
Step 12. Place the vase in the sunlight
Step 13. Wait for the sprouts to turn green
When they turn green, they are ready to eat. Store them in the refrigerator, even to slow their growth, for up to a week.
