Almost all the pellets, liquids or granules on the market to eliminate annoying snails and slugs are toxic, and can also be harmful to pets, children and wildlife. Since snails love yeast, this article will show you an easy, even child-friendly, and non-animal-friendly method of ridding your garden of these pests.
Steps
Step 1. Take a piece of brewer's yeast or baking powder and dissolve it in a jar of warm water and sugar
The pot must be deep enough to prevent snails and slugs from crawling out. Optionally, you can also buy containers (traps) designed specifically for this purpose in garden stores. The ideal solution is 480 ml of hot water, a sachet of dry yeast and a teaspoon each of salt and sugar. The salt ensures that snails and snails die before they have a chance to escape. If you eventually want to keep the snails and / or the mixture for the compost pile or your garden respectively, do not put the salt, otherwise the soil becomes too salty.
Step 2. Dig a hole large enough to insert the pot so that the top edge is level with the ground
Get better results if you work in the vegetable garden or in another area of the garden where snails and slugs are often present.
Step 3. Repeat this procedure every 2 to 3 meters
Place these pots / traps throughout the garden at a distance of 2-3 meters from each other, since the yeast does not have a greater range of action, to attract snails.
Step 4. Check the pots every day, remove any invertebrates that are left in the containers and eliminate them
They will have crawled into the jar and drowned. You can decide to leave them in the garden to decompose and contribute to the formation of organic matter in the soil, or put them in a compost container (in both cases, cutting them into pieces speeds up the process, if it does not cause you problems).
Step 5. Change the solution regularly
Rain and evaporation alter the prepared mixture, so you will have to replace and / or supplement it, if necessary.
