Slime stimulates the imagination of adults and children. The beauty is that it can also be a very fun experiment to learn the process of some chemical reactions. There are several ways to make this dough with household products, such as soda or milk. You can get a normal sticky mixture or even make a frothier slime.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Making Creamy Slime
Step 1. Measure 180g baking soda
Pour about 180 g of baking soda into a mixing bowl. There are no precise measurements for this type of recipe. A 240ml (or 180g) cup should be fine.
Step 2. Mix the green dish soap into the baking soda
Sprinkle a small amount into the baking soda. Make sure it is green so that the dough takes on this color. Use a spoon to mix it. Add it gradually until you get a solid and creamy substance.
The precise amount of detergent is variable. Add a little at a time to achieve the right consistency. It should look like some kind of greenish pudding
Step 3. Add more baking soda if the solution is too liquid
If you accidentally overdo the detergent, the slime will become too liquid. If it looks watery, pour in a little more baking soda to correct the mistake.
Step 4. Add a pinch of food coloring if needed
If the hue isn't as intense as you want, add a few more drops of food coloring to make the dough a little greener.
Step 5. Play
Try dipping a few toys in the slime. For example, pretend it is toxic waste and puppets fall into it to save themselves. You can also use it to decorate a diorama. Make a model of a haunted house and use it as a creepy attraction.
Warning: the slime is not edible, so do not ingest it
Part 2 of 3: Making the Foaming Slime
Step 1. Pour the vinegar into a bowl
Add about ½ liter of white vinegar. Use only the white one, do not replace it with apple cider vinegar.
Step 2. Add the xanthan gum
Xanthan gum is a thickening and stabilizing substance, which you can buy on the Internet or in grocery stores. Pour about 5 g of it into the bowl of vinegar and mix. Continue until the mixture is smooth, i.e. until the white lumps disappear.
It is sometimes difficult to find xanthan gum in the supermarket. So, you will probably have to order it online. Keep this in mind and make your purchase a few days before making the slime
Step 3. Combine the green food coloring
A few drops of this dye will be enough to give the mixture the look of slime. Start with a few drops and add more until the mixture reaches the color you want.
Step 4. Put the solution in the refrigerator overnight
It will be too liquid at first. To make it stickier in texture, chill it in the refrigerator. Even if it only takes 2-3 hours to thicken it, it is advisable to leave it overnight. This will give the xanthan gum time to dissolve completely.
Step 5. Sprinkle the baking soda on a surface
Make sure you do this on a sink or in the bathtub so that you can clean it up more easily later on. Pour a thin layer of baking soda on the surface or in the container of your choice to cover the bottom.
Step 6. Stir the mixture again
When you take it out of the fridge, keep stirring it until it reaches a soft and quite creamy consistency.
Step 7. Add the vinegar until you get the right consistency
To check if the mixture is ready, take it from the bowl with a spoon and drop it: it should be fluid. If it is too compact, add more vinegar and stir again. Repeat this until it becomes more liquid.
Step 8. Pour the mixture over the baking soda
Once the dough has thickened, pour it over the baking soda. While the slime mixture is acidic due to the presence of vinegar, the baking soda is basic. By adding it you will get a more frothy and effervescent dough. The more you use, the greater the effect.
Step 9. Play with the slime
There are many ways to play with this type of slime. For example, you can pretend it's some kind of toxic water found on a foreign planet and play with puppets in astronaut outfits. You can use dinosaurs by pretending it's prehistoric slime. Some people just like to watch her blow bubbles..
- Be sure to thoroughly wash the toys after dipping them in slime.
- Warning: the slime is not edible, so do not ingest it.
Part 3 of 3: Making the Slime with Jelly Effect
Step 1. Pour some milk into a glass
Add 7 tablespoons of skimmed (or otherwise low-fat) milk to a glass or bowl. Whole milk fat can alter the consistency of the dough, so do not use this type of milk or milk with 2% fat.
Step 2. Add the vinegar
Mix a tablespoon of vinegar in the milk. It will be enough for the milk protein to separate from the liquid. Adding the vinegar will increase the acidity of the mixture and cause the casein to detach from the solution.
The milk will begin to form lumps when it reacts to contact with the vinegar. They should slowly settle to the bottom of the glass during this reaction
Step 3. Pour the solution using a coffee filter
Once the lumps have settled to the bottom, sift the solution using a coffee filter. The liquid will pass through leaving only the milk lumps in the filter. Blot them with a paper towel to make sure they are dry and remove excess water. Transfer the solid pieces to a clean bowl.
Step 4. Mix the baking soda
After transferring the milk lumps to another bowl, add 5 g of baking soda, which will help you blend the proteins and make the dough more compact. The mixture will begin to look more and more like slime. Stir the baking soda into the milk until you get a mixture similar to a vanilla pudding.
Depending on the size of the lumps, you will probably need to add more baking soda. If you can't get the consistency of the vanilla pudding, pour in a little more until it is just right
Step 5. Add the green food coloring
A few drops of this dye will turn your dough into classic green slime. Pour in a couple of drops and mix. If you want it to be slightly darker, add more dye.
Step 6. Play with the slime
Once ready, you can play it. Try modeling it with your hands. You can also use it to decorate something, like a model. Use it for example to create a cloudy pond in a forest.
Make sure you don't bring it close to your mouth - it's not edible
Advice
- Supervise the children when they make the slime.
- If it becomes lumpy, add more water.
Warnings
- Do not allow children to swallow the slime.
- Vinegar is acidic, while bicarbonate is basic. It is advisable to wear gloves and protective goggles to handle these substances or to control the preparation of the slime.
