Baking soda is a simple yet versatile natural cleaner that is effective for removing bad odors from upholstery. For example, just sprinkle a handful on the bed to fight bad odors and keep it clean. Before applying it, remove the bedspread and sheets. Once the process is complete, you can vacuum it off to enjoy a perfectly fresh and clean bed.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Making the Bed
Step 1. Remove the sheets and put them in the washing machine
To start, remove all sheets, blankets and duvet. Wash the laundry in the washing machine by setting it to the maximum temperature to eliminate all germs. Use a suitable detergent.
Roll out the sheets after washing. Those who have a dryer can use it by setting it to the maximum temperature, in order to make sure that no germs or bacteria are left
Step 2. Remove dirt and dust residue from the mattress surface using a vacuum cleaner with a specific upholstery nozzle
Alternatively, use a powerful handheld vacuum cleaner. Make sure the nozzle is clean, otherwise you risk making the mattress further dirty. Vacuum the cracks, seams and folds of the mattress to remove all dirt and dust on the surface.
Be sure to vacuum the sides of the mattress as well, as dirt and dust can collect in this area as well
Step 3. Apply a stain remover to the stained areas
Use an upholstery stain remover or make it yourself by mixing a tablespoon of mild dish soap and a cup of water in a spray bottle. Apply the stain remover to the affected areas and dab it with a damp cloth.
Stains that contain proteins, such as sweat, urine, and blood, generally go away with a regular stain remover. Stains like red wine and coffee may be more stubborn and therefore require a more powerful stain remover
Part 2 of 3: Apply the Sodium Bicarbonate
Step 1. Sprinkle one to three cups (200-650g) of baking soda on the mattress
Apply a generous amount, especially if the mattress hasn't been cleaned in a long time or if it smells bad. Cover the entire surface with an even layer of baking soda.
Pour more baking soda on areas that give off a particularly strong odor to neutralize it
Step 2. Expose the mattress to direct sunlight
Moving the mattress next to a window that receives direct sunlight would be ideal, as the heat from the sun allows the baking soda to work more effectively.
Put the mattress outside to better expose it to sunlight and make cleaning even more effective. Make sure no rain is expected to prevent it from getting wet during the night
Step 3. Let the baking soda sit for 24 hours
The baking soda should be left on for it to do its job. Make sure that nobody uses or touches the bed. Plan to sleep elsewhere so that the baking soda is left on.
Part 3 of 3: Vacuum the Baking Soda
Step 1. Use the upholstery nozzle
This accessory is powerful enough to allow you to remove the baking soda without damaging the surface of the mattress.
You can also use a handheld vacuum, which has a smaller nozzle
Step 2. Vacuum the baking soda
Make sure you run the vacuum cleaner over the seams and crevices of the mattress to remove the baking soda well.
Step 3. Turn the mattress over and repeat the procedure
Clean the top area, turn it over and wipe it on the other side. Sprinkle one to three cups (200-650g) of baking soda again and leave it out for 24 hours. Vacuum the baking soda. At the end of the procedure the mattress will be completely clean and disinfected.
Step 4. Clean the mattress with baking soda once or twice a year
Get used to cleaning the bed with baking soda to always keep it fresh and free of bad smells. Do the procedure at the beginning of the year and in the middle of the year to prevent dirt and dust from accumulating on the surface of the bed.
