It's official. That box in the closet is there that has been watching you for too long, daring you to throw it away because it is almost painful to see it there. It has nothing to do with your favorite colors, it has nothing to do with you, and you certainly can't give it away. What to do? It's DIY time, of course! Check out Step 1 for lots of ideas to make your storage system chic.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Explore Ideas

Step 1. Use some fabric

With fabric, hot glue, scissors, a ruler and a pencil you can create a box that matches anything. If you have leftover fabric leftover from other projects or even your favorite shirt that you don't wear anymore (or you can look for something nice at a store), you're well on your way.

Cut the fabric to the size of the box. Mark where the bottom of the box goes, put hot glue on the bottom, and stick the fabric on it. Cut a line around the edges of the long side of the box. With hot glue, make it adhere to the long side and the cut tabs to the short side. Repeat the process on all sides. Done! Unless you have a lid: you can repeat the process on it too, or leave it as it is to accentuate the contrast

Step 2. Use buttons

If you want to be creative, use buttons to give your box some grit and character. Buttons of different sizes and shades of the same color create a pleasant pattern, but buttons of different colors and shapes are also good. All you need is your grandma's stash of buttons and a hot glue gun!

  • Be very careful with hot glue and use it in moderation - you don't want your box full of small transparent spots and a few buttons here and there.
  • If you don't like the base color of your box, cover it up! Use fabric, paper, or just colored paint or markers.

Step 3. Make some paper flowers

If you're feeling particularly creative (or romantic), paper roses are easier to make than you think. Using only paper is already fine, but with a few cuts the roses will blossom like weeds. All you need is paper, scissors and glue. To begin:

  • Take a piece of paper and draw a spiral. Space the lines more apart for larger roses (it can be nice to make them of various sizes).
  • Cut out the spiral along the lines.
  • Glue the edges of the spiral together, overlapping them a little. This creates a natural petal-like shape that looks just like that of a rose!

Step 4. Use sequins, sequins or other shiny things

With a little modge podge (homemade glue) or rubber cement (another type of glue), the box will be practically dazzling. You can also make complicated designs with different colors. If you have a few hours to dry, it's a great way to create something really eye-catching.

For example, you can make strips of three colors. All you have to do is spread the modge podge on the area where you want the first color, apply sequins or sequins, etc. and let it dry. Then do the same with the second and third areas. Try to make a lot of details in the drawing. A few loops?

Step 5. Do a decoupage

If you have a lot of paper of the same type and some vinyl glue, decoupage is the way to go. Can you imagine the box covered with the pages of your favorite book, beautiful wallpaper, sheet music or even tissue paper or wrapping paper? It will be absolutely the center of attention!

With a ratio of 1: 1 between glue and water, all you have to do is spread the mixture on the box, apply a layer of paper, and repeat the operation until you get the desired result. If you want, coat it with clear varnish or nail polish. Ta-dah

Step 6. Keep it essential with markers, tapes, stickers

You've probably thought about it before, huh? What have you accumulated in the DIY drawer? In minutes you can wrap it up with tape, design your next masterpiece, or stick stickers on it to make it unique.

For markers, it's probably best if you use permanent ones. The ones that children use are washable and can discolor over time

Step 7. Use lace

To make the box more elegant, choose a lace-like fabric (maybe even with a few pearls, if you're feeling inspired!). You can stick them with either modge podge, vinyl glue, rubber cement or hot glue - pretty much anything that sticks without leaving a colored residue. Try overlapping different patterns to create a texture and a twist.

Try cutting the lace into different shapes first. Even though the whole box is covered in lace, the design on top can pop out, giving dimension and panache

Step 8. Use sticky paper

If you have a steady hand, sticky paper can be the best way to liven up even the most boring box. It has a sticky layer in the back, which means you don't have to deal with glue issues anywhere. Take a trip to the nearest home improvement store in the shelves section. And maybe you can even rearrange the inside of a throwaway wardrobe!

  • You just have to pay attention to the overlaps and bubbles. This method is similar to that used with fabric:

    • Center the box on the paper.
    • Cut a line outside from the long side.
    • Make the long side of the paper adhere to the long side of the box by folding the tabs inside.
    • Do the same with the other sides.

    Step 9. Paint

Let the artist in you shine! Acrylic paints are good for almost any box. It's a smooth surface and no one is putting any pressure on you to be the new Mona Lisa, so enjoy! Even an abstract mixture of strong colors without a real design will look good.

Make sure you only paint one side at a time. You will not want to turn the box and see all the work of an hour ruined

Step 1. Decorate a gift package.

A beautiful gift is great, but a beautiful gift with a personalized box is doubly appreciated. Take your new ideas and put them to good use! Maybe it's a gift they won't use forever, but the box certainly is.

Step 2. Decorate a box to store items

As for your closet, imagine you have something you really want to look at and that's not an eyesore. Never again be forced to have plastic containers around. You can already go and tidy up the wardrobe!

Step 3. Decorate the box with newspapers

If you're missing cute paper, newspapers are surprisingly elegant, especially if they're black and white. Take out the vinyl glue and your decoupage skills and readjust all the boxes: they will have the same style but they will also be unique.

Step 4. Decorate the crochet box

If for some strange reason the material the box is made of is unstable and neither the glue nor the paint adhere easily, why not crochet it? It actually consists of crocheting a larger box to put on top of the first, but the result is the same. This can also protect any special boxes you have that you don't want to be ruined in the sunlight or between little hands.
