Learn how to coat a key or coin with copper, using only electricity, vinegar, and salt.
Steps
Step 1. Fill the container with vinegar, enough to completely submerge the host metal object
Step 2. Add the salt by spoonfuls, until it stops dissolving in the vinegar
At this point there will be some extra salt in the bottom of the container that contains the vinegar.
Step 3. Cut the cable in half, then cut the rubber jacket, enough to connect to the metals
Step 4. Connect the cables to both the host metal and the copper, wrapping it around us
Make a hole in the top of the copper foil and wrap the wire inside it. Place the copper on one side of the vessel, holding the wire on top and immersing at least half of the foil in the electrolyte solution.
Step 5. Connect the other ends of the cable to the battery ends, using tape
Do not immerse the battery. You will notice that as soon as you dip the nickel in the vinegar, it will start producing bubbles. Subsequently, bubbles will appear on the nickel, which you will need to periodically remove.
Step 6. You will find that after about two days, depending on its size, the host metal object will be completely covered with copper
Advice
- Do not use copper connection cables.
- It doesn't matter if the vinegar is distilled or not.
- It does not matter if the host metal is already plated, but if it is a different color than the copper, it is easier to observe the plating process.
- Whether it is kosher or regular salt, it makes no difference.
- As a container, the base of an empty milk carton works well.
