Artificial flowers capture the essence of nature without the thought of having uprooted the plant. They last forever and make a great gift or decorating idea. Read how to learn how to make them with fabric, ribbon or non-woven fabric.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Non-woven flowers
Step 1. Put the materials together
To make delicate flowers that look like carnations, you will need a few things:
- 3 sheets of non-woven fabric of the same color
- A pair of scissors
- A ruler and a pencil
- A clear pipe
- Transparent adhesive tape
- Florist's ribbon
Step 2. Cut a rectangle from the non-woven fabric
Use the scissors to make a rectangle 30, 48x7, 62 cm.
Step 3. Draw lines
Using the ruler, draw a line starting at 1.27 cm from the bottom of the rectangle. Then draw a diagonal from the top corner to one side to connect with the line.
Step 4. Cut along the diagonal
The leftover piece of fabric can be thrown away.
Step 5. Create the fringes
Cut straight lines from the top of the diagonal. The cuts should end on the line pulled on the fabric.
Step 6. Insert the stem
Attach the top of a pipe cleaner along the short side of the fabric using scotch tape.
Step 7. Roll the fabric around the stem
Step 8. Secure the edge along the stem
Use clear tape to keep it from showing.
Step 9. Wrap florist tape around it to cover everything
Step 10. Pull by spreading the fabric petals
Thus you will get the shape of the carnation.
Step 11. Finished
Method 2 of 3: Ribbon Flowers
Step 1. Choose the ribbon and other material
You can make cute little flowers by choosing ribbons of various types, polka dots for example, or opt for a realistic approach by choosing one whose shades are similar to real petals. Here's what you'll need to make flowers using ribbons.
- A 25 cm long ribbon cut.
- A needle with thread that matches the color of the ribbon.
Step 2. Sew a string along the ribbon
This stitch creates waves that allow you to shape the flower when finished
- Thread the needle. Tie a knot at one end of the thread. So it will be stopped.
-
Thread the needle from back to front into the ribbon along the edge. Pull the thread until it stops at the knot. Thread it again and go up creating the stitch. Repeat for the entire length of the ribbon.
Step 3. Pull the thread tight
The ribbon will curl before you finish sewing. This will create the basic shape of the flower, i.e. the petals.
Step 4. Sew the last stitches
With a couple of back stitches you will secure the shape of your flower.
Step 5. Fold the ribbon into a circle
The tails of the ribbon should dangle from your hand as you hold the flower.
Step 6. Fold from back to front on the tails
Sew on top then below. Secure the thread with a knot or two if necessary.
Step 7. Cut the tails
By cutting as close to the seam line as possible, the flower will retain its circular shape.
Step 8. Sew a button in the center of the flower
Method 3 of 3: Fabric Flowers
Step 1. Choose your fabric and other material
Tulle, silk and other lightweight fabrics are perfect for making flowers. Here's what you need:
- A piece of cloth 9x50
- Needle and thread
- Iron
Step 2. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise
Step 3. Sew the short sides
Step 4. Turn it over
The seams of both sides should be on the inside.
Step 5. Press the margins
Do not iron in the center or the flower will be full of folds.
Step 6. Baste the length of the fabric
Knot one end of a thread and prepare the needle. Baste along the fabric where it is folded. Continue sewing until you get to the other end.
Step 7. Put the fabric together
Step 8. Press along the basted seams so that the flower curls and resembles the petals of a rose
Step 9. Sew with the edges together
Use the end of the thread to sew the edges together and keep the rose in shape.
