Many clothing catalogs or fitness programs require you to measure different parts of the body. Here's how to properly measure each area. The following tips will help you take basic clothing measurements.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Men
Step 1. Get a soft measuring tape
They are often found in haberdashery.
Step 2. Neck:
- Measure around the base of the neck in inches.
- Round off to the nearest half inch.
Step 3. Chest:
Wrap the measuring tape under the arms around the fullest part of the chest (usually just above the nipples)
Step 4. Sleeve:
- Bend your elbow and place your hand on your hip.
- Have someone measure from the center of the back of the neck to the wrist, placing the measuring tape on the shoulder, around the elbow to the wrist.
Step 5. Waist:
- Wrap the measuring tape around where you normally wear trousers.
- Keep the tape a little loose by keeping your finger between the tape and your waist.
Step 6. Hips:
Stand with your legs about 6 inches apart and measure around the fullest part of your hips
Step 7. Inner leg:
- Put on a pair of shoes.
- Have someone else measure from your crotch to the back of your heel, where you want your pants to fall.
Method 2 of 2: Women
Step 1. Get a soft measuring tape
They are often found in haberdashery.
Step 2. Breast:
Wrap the measuring tape under your arms around the fullest part of your chest
Step 3. Bra:
- Wrap the tape measure just below the bust, around the rib cage. Don't forget to add four (five in case of odd number) inches, this is your band length. Then subtract your bust measurement from your underbust measurement. The result is your bra size.
- Take your breast measurement and subtract the second measurement you took.
-
The difference, in inches, will give you the bra size according to the following chart:
- AA = 1/2"
- A = 1"
- B = 2"
- C = 3"
- D = 4"
- DD or E = 5"
Step 4. Waist:
Wrap the measuring tape around where you normally wear trousers
Step 5. Hips:
Stand with your legs about 6 inches apart and measure around the fullest part of your hips (usually about 7-10 inches below your waist)
Advice
- Have someone else take the measurements rather than do it yourself.
- Remove as many layers as you can, such as multi-layered tank tops. Keep your bra.
- When measuring, keep the tape snug, but not tight.
- Keep in mind that cotton shrinks.
