Vagisil is a topical cream, available without a prescription, that relieves vaginal itching. It comes in two strengths and is simple to use; however, some simple precautions are required.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Using Vagisil
Step 1. Use the minimum amount needed
If you apply too much, you may experience side effects, so use it only in small doses. The amount to be spread should not exceed the length of the first phalanx (2-3 cm).
Step 2. Apply the medication only to the outside of the vagina
Do not smear it inside, as its formulation is not suitable for this purpose. Use it only on parts of the genitals that are outside the body, such as the labia minora and labia majora, as well as the vulva. Use your finger to apply it to such surfaces, it will relieve itching.
Do not use it on large areas of the body, otherwise you could experience serious side effects. For this reason, limit yourself only to the external genitalia. If the itch extends beyond the areas that can be covered with a small dose of Vagisil, then you should see your gynecologist
Step 3. Let the skin absorb the cream
The product works by blocking the nerve signals that cause the itching sensation. This way, you find momentary relief from the discomfort. Remember that it takes a few minutes for the drug to take effect, so be patient.
Step 4. Apply the cream 3-4 times a day
You shouldn't use Vagisil more than four times a day. If your symptoms don't subside even with this cream, contact your gynecologist for an appointment. You may need a more potent prescription drug.
Part 2 of 2: Knowing when to go to the doctor
Step 1. Go to the emergency room immediately if you experience severe adverse symptoms
The active substance in Vagisil (benzocaine) can trigger serious negative reactions, but only when it is taken by mouth. However, you shouldn't hesitate and go to the hospital in case you show up:
- Dizziness
- Tachycardia;
- Shortness of breath;
- Bluish, greyish or pale skin, nails, or lips.
Step 2. Pay attention to the allergic reaction
Topical benzocaine can trigger an allergic reaction in some people. Discontinue use and see your doctor if you notice:
- Severe burning, tingling or aching sensation
- Swelling, redness, or warmth
- Secretions;
- Blisters.
Step 3. Pay attention to common side effects
As a result of using Vagisil, you may experience some mild and quite common negative reactions. These include:
- Slight burning or itching sensation
- Mild redness and pain
- White, dry, flaky skin at the application site.
Step 4. Call your gynecologist if you don't notice any improvement
Vagisil is used as a short-term temporary treatment. If your symptoms last longer than seven days and don't seem to be improving, then you should contact your gynecologist.
