If you want to keep the buttercream for an upcoming or future occasion, you need to make sure it lasts as long as possible. Regardless of when you intend to use it, in a day, a week or a month, it only takes a few simple precautions to make sure it stays in good condition.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Store the Butter Cream in the Refrigerator or Freezer
Step 1. Put the buttercream in an airtight container
check that it is properly sealed before storing it in the refrigerator to make sure the buttercream lasts as long as possible. You can use a common plastic food container, as long as the lid is airtight.
Step 2. Store the buttercream in the refrigerator and use within a week
In general, the fresher a food, the better it tastes. However, if circumstances require you to make the buttercream a few days in advance, the simplest solution is to store it in the refrigerator.
If you keep it in the refrigerator, the buttercream can last up to two weeks, but it is preferable to use it within 7 days to appreciate its freshness
Step 3. Keep it away from strong smelling foods
Be careful with food in the refrigerator to prevent it from losing its good scent and absorbing its smell. The last thing you want is to smell fish while eating your cake.
Step 4. Let the buttercream cool to room temperature before using
Remove it from the refrigerator early to give it time to return to its original consistency. Mixing it is also useful for making it soft again.
Step 5. Put the cream in the freezer if you want it to last up to 2 months
If you need to keep it for longer, you can put it in the freezer instead of in the refrigerator. Again, it is important to transfer it to an airtight container to protect it from the air. Store the buttercream in the freezer and use it within 2 months at the latest.
Remove the buttercream from the freezer one day in advance of when you intend to use it. Transfer the container to the refrigerator and let it thaw slowly
Method 2 of 2: Store a Frosted Cake with Butter Cream
Step 1. Leave the cake at room temperature if you intend to serve it within 3 days
If you don't want to refrigerate it, you can leave it at room temperature for three days before it spoils. It can stand on the kitchen counter, but it's best to cover it with a food cover to keep bugs away.
Step 2. Put the cake in the refrigerator if you intend to serve it within a week
If you need to keep a cake glazed with buttercream for more than 3 days, place it in the refrigerator without covering it. If you have kept the buttercream in the refrigerator for a few days before using it to decorate the cake, take into account the time that has already elapsed to determine the correct expiration date.
Step 3. Put the cake in the freezer if there is not enough space in the refrigerator
Again, don't cover the cake; simply place it on a tray and place it in the freezer. Keep in mind that even though the buttercream stays good, the cake may dry out.
Step 4. Do not leave the cake at room temperature in hot weather
The risk is that the liquid part separates from the fatty one and therefore the glaze melts. As a general rule, it is always best to avoid leaving food out of the refrigerator in hot weather.
