Pepsi and Coca-Cola will never reveal the ingredients of their secret recipes, but there are so many other companies that have made them public. In this article you will find the recipe for making OpenCola at home, you can also create and modify the recipe as you wish.
Ingrediants
Aroma
- 3, 50 ml of orange oil
- 1.00 ml of lemon oil
- 1.00 ml of nutmeg oil
- 1, 25 ml of cinnamon oil
- 0.25ml of coriander oil
- 0.25ml neroli oil (similar to petitgrain, bergamot, or bitter orange oil)
- 2, 75 ml of file oil
- 0.25 ml of lavender oil
- 10 g of gum arabic FOR FOOD (THICKENER)
- 3.00 ml of water
Concentrated
- 10 ml of flavoring (about 2 tablespoons)
- 17.5 ml 75% citric or phosphoric acid (3 1/2 tablespoons)
- 2, 28 l of water
- 2.36 kg of white sugar (or other sweetener)
- 2.5ml caffeine (optional but affects taste a lot)
- 30ml caramel coloring (optional)
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Making the Aroma
Step 1. Combine and blend the oils
Step 2. Add the gum arabic and continue mixing
Step 3. Add the water and mix well
For this step, use a blender to blend the ingredients well.
You can prepare the aroma in advance and use it whenever you want. Store it in the fridge or at room temperature in an airtight glass jar. When you store it, the oils will separate from the water. Mix it up before using it. When you use it, the gum arabic will keep all the ingredients together (you will probably need to put the syrup in the blender for the gum to dissolve)
Part 2 of 4: Making the Acid Solution from the Powder
You can make a lot of it to be able to use it in the future, or just what you need at the moment. In any case, the total must be made up of 75% powder and 25% water.
Step 1. Weigh 13 grams of the acid powder and place it in a glass jar
Step 2. Boil about 10-20ml of water or put it in the microwave for about one minute
Step 3. Add 4.5ml of hot water to the acid powder (enough for the weight to reach 17.5g)
Step 4. Stir the mixture carefully and dissolve the powder
Part 3 of 4: Making the concentrate
Step 1. Mix 10 ml of flavoring (2 tablespoons) with citric or phosphoric acid
Step 2. Mix the water with the sugar and, if desired, add the caffeine
- If the aroma is solid (rubber) it will be necessary to put part of the water in the blender, add the aroma and acid and at the end the sugar and the other water.
- If you use it, be sure to check that the caffeine is completely dissolved before continuing with the recipe.
Step 3. Pour the acid and aroma slowly into the sugar and water mixture
Adding the acid to the water reduces the risk of the acid splashing.
Step 4. Add the caramel coloring and mix
You can use any dye or leave the soda in its natural color, the results won't change.
Part 4 of 4: Making the Fizzy Drink
Step 1. Mix 1 part of concentrate with five parts of water
In other words, the amount of water must always be five times higher than that of the concentrate.
Step 2. Make the soda
You can do this in several ways:
- Alone.
- Mixing carbonated water instead of normal water directly into the concentrate.
- Using a carbonator which will make the tap water carbonated.
Advice
- Finding all the ingredients could be difficult. Look for a specialist dealer and place a single order (there are many, check the discussion page for examples). Supermarkets usually don't have these ingredients available and you should go to specific stores.
- The cans of OpenCola that were distributed at various events contained these ingredients. The procedure for putting carbonated drinks in cans has nothing to do with this article.
Warnings
- Gum arabic can be found in two different forms: for artistic purposes and for food use. Make sure you buy the one for food or you risk getting seriously intoxicated.
- High doses of caffeine could be toxic. Be careful not to put too much. Remember that the quantity must be less than 100 mg.
- Phosphoric acid in contact with the skin could cause burns. If this happens, put the burned area under water for at least 15 minutes and see a doctor.
- Lavender oil has many dangerous side effects, so you might as well avoid using it.
- Many of the oils in the recipe could irritate the skin. When preparing them, be careful, as some are able to melt even the shelves of a refrigerator! Store them in a glass jar.
