Writing an academic or persuasive essay that cites the work of others requires that you give proper credit to the original authors. Read the directions of your editor or teacher to decide which style to give to your text. The MLA and APA styles are common in academic circles, while the Chicago style manual is popular with publishers. Then, format your bibliography accordingly and cite your sources in alphabetical order. Here's how to quote a movie.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Quote the movie with the MLA style
Step 1. Start with the full title of the movie
Italicize it and have it followed by a period.
Step 2. Add the director's name
Type "Reg." and then the director's full name: first name, middle initial (if any) and surname. Add a point.
Step 3. List the key players
Type "Att." followed by the list of actors: name and surname, separated with a comma. Place a period to close the list.
Use a comma between the names of the last 2 actors, if there are more than 2
Step 4. Type in the name of the production company or distributor
Put a comma immediately after.
Step 5. Write the year of distribution of the film
For example, "Twentieth Century Fox, 1965." Put a period.
Step 6. Close with the middle of the film
It is usually "Film" or "DVD". Put a period.
Method 2 of 3: Quote a Chicago-Style Movie
Step 1. Start with the full title of the movie in italics
Add a point.
Step 2. Write the director's name
Type "Directed by" and the director's name, followed by a period.
Step 3. Add the film's release year
Add a semicolon.
Step 4. Add the film's production location
For example, "1956; Hollywood, CA." Put a colon after the place.
Step 5. Provide the name of the manufacturer or distributor
Add a comma.
Step 6. Add the year of distribution
Have it followed by a point.
Step 7. Close with the distribution medium or format after the name
For example, you could use "DVD", "Film", or "Blu-Ray". It is not always necessary information.
Method 3 of 3: Quote an APA Style Movie
Step 1. Start with the manufacturer name
The format should be surname, comma, initial. Put the word "Manufacturer" in parentheses after the name.
The initial must be punctuated and a comma goes after the parenthesis
Step 2. Put the ampersand symbol "&" after the producer and write the director
Use the same format: surname, initial of the bulleted name. Put the word "Director" after the name in parentheses, followed by a period.
If there is only one producer and director, list the first name. Follow the name with the words "Producer & Director" in parentheses
Step 3. Write the year of production in parentheses
Add a point.
Step 4. Add the movie title in italics
Put the media in parentheses after the title. Close with a period.
For example, the medium could be, "Film", "Motion Picture" or "DVD."
Step 5. Write the country of origin
Don't shorten it. Close with a colon.
Step 6. End with the name of the manufacturer or distributor
End the quote with a period.
