Are you looking to take your Mario Kart Wii skill to the next level? Successfully performing stunts during a race can give you a brief acceleration and allow you to overtake opponents. In a centimeter game like Mario Kart, this can make all the difference in the world, so learn how to perform stunts on the ground and in the air to get the edge you need to win!
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Perform Stunts in the Air
Using the WiiMote
These instructions are for the WiiMote + nunchuk and WiiMote + steering wheel control scheme.
Step 1. Look for an opportunity to jump
In Mario Kart Wii, you can't do stunts everywhere. For aerial acrobatics, you'll first need to find a jump, ramp, or whatever else allows you to be in the air. There are usually plenty of opportunities to jump on the slopes.
- The most noticeable spots for stunts are often the accelerating ramps illuminated in rainbow colors - all of these ramps give you the chance to do some stunts. On some tracks, like Centro Commerciale Cocco, you will even be "forced" to use them.
- Even the smallest bumps on the slopes that make you jump for a second give you a chance to perform a stunt, so always be ready!
Step 2. Shake the WiiMote as you take off the ground to perform a stunt
As soon as you leave the ramp to jump, vibrate or shake the WiiMote in any direction. Use the force necessary to make the controller register your movement, but don't overdo it, or you won't be able to regain control when you return to the ground. If you find the right timing, you should do a stunt! You will hear the controller vibrate, a sound and your character will rejoice.
The direction in which you shake the WiiMote (up, down, right or left) will determine the type of stunt. However, the acceleration you will receive will always be the same
Step 3. Stay in control once you land
If you perform a stunt, when you return to the ground healthy (ie you will not be hit by a shell or similar), you will receive a short acceleration - a kind of mini mushroom.
Be careful to control the direction when you get this boost. While the speed boost is very useful for overtaking opponents, it will be harder to dodge obstacles as you will have less time to react
Step 4. Combine multiple consecutive stunts to keep your speed up
You can perform just one stunt per jump, so you will get a boost at most. However, if you perform multiple jumps in a row and complete a stunt each time, you will receive a significant speed boost. Performing many stunts in a row without colliding or going off the track takes a lot of skill, so keep practicing. Once you have mastered this skill, you will have a great advantage over the toughest opponents.
Using a Traditional Controller
These instructions are for the control schemes with the Wii Classic Controller and the GameCube Controller.
Step 1. Jump off a ramp
To perform stunts without a WiiMote, you'll need to follow a slightly different method - easier for some players. To start, jump off a ramp (as you would if you were using a WiiMote.)
Step 2. Use the directional arrows as soon as you get off the ground
Classic and GameCube controllers don't have motion sensors, so instead of shaking them, you'll need to use one of the four directions on the directional pad to perform a stunt. The directional pad is the cross-shaped button on the left side of the controller - Not is the lever you use to turn.
Note that the pad is in a different position on the Classic controller than on the GameCube controller. On the Classic controller, it is above the left lever used for cornering, while on the GameCube controller it is below it
Step 3. Land
Again, if you perform the stunt correctly, you will hear a sound and your character will cheer. When you land, you will receive a short push.
As with the WiiMote, the direction you press will determine the stunt. However, the acceleration at the end of the jump will always be the same
Method 2 of 2: Perform Ground Wheelies
Using the WiiMote
These instructions are for the WiiMote + nunchuk and WiiMote + steering wheel control scheme.
Step 1. Choose a motorcycle before the race
In addition to the stunts you can perform in the air, you can also receive acceleration on the ground with a wheelie. However, this option is only available for motorcycles - four-wheel karts cannot wheelie.
Step 2. Lift the controller straight up when you have reached maximum speed
To perform a wheelie, first drive normally and reach a good speed. When you come across a straight, lift the controller. The front wheel of your motorcycle should lift off the ground.
- When performing a wheelie, you should immediately notice an acceleration.
- If you are using the steering wheel, be sure to keep it straight when you raise it to avoid cornering during wheelie.
Step 3. Push the controller down to finish the wheelie
When you want to finish the wheelie and resume driving normally, move the controller down. The front wheel of the bike should return to the ground and you should be able to turn normally.
Step 4. Wheelies only on straights
When wheelies, you will notice that the maneuverability of the vehicle is severely reduced. You will have little control over your direction of travel, so even gentle turns can give you problems. For this, it is best to wheel only in the sections of the track where you do not have to make changes of direction. Long straights are best suited.
You should also watch out for opponents when wheelies. If an opponent hits you during a wheelie, you will lose control and your speed will drop a lot
Use a Conventional Controller
These instructions are for the control schemes with the Wii Classic Controller and the GameCube Controller.
Step 1. Reach maximum speed
As with aerial stunts, you'll need to follow a slightly different method of wheelie with a traditional controller. Start as you normally would, accelerating until you reach maximum speed.
Step 2. Press up on the directional pad to perform a wheelie
When you are ready to maneuver, press the direction up on the pad (the same cross button you used for aerobatics). Your character should perform a wheelie.
Step 3. Press down on the directional pad to finish the wheelie
When ready, press down to return the wheel to the ground. You will be able to regain normal control of the vehicle.
Advice
- Make sure you look ahead so that the push doesn't put you into obstacles.
- Look for half-pipes (pipes with ramps on both sides of the track) and quarter pipes (ramps on one side of the track) to get a lot of practice with aerial acrobatics. The Montagna DK track has many similar sections.
- You don't have to jump off a ramp to perform a stunt - you can do them for example by jumping from mushroom to mushroom in Mushroom Gorge.
