You can build wooden fences with four planks and two sticks, as long as they are all the same type of wood. Brick fences of the Underworld can only be built with that material, which is found in the Underworld. In many places, you can also find randomly generated fences.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Building a Wooden Fence
Step 1. Make at least six wooden planks
You will need them to create the fences. By using different types of wood you can get fences of different colors. Placing a single block of wood in the center of the crafting grid will produce four planks.
You will use four of the planks in the construction of the fence and two of them to get sticks
Step 2. Make two sticks of the same wood as the planks
To do this, use two of the planks you built earlier. You can turn two planks into four sticks by placing them in two overlapping boxes in the center of the crafting grid.
Step 3. Build the parts of the fence
Place one stick in the center of the crafting grid and another directly below it. Place the boards on both sides of the sticks, so that the two lowest rows are arranged like this: board, stick, board.
All pieces must be made from the same type of wood
Step 4. Move the fences to your inventory
Thanks to the recipe described above, you will get three parts of the fence.
Method 2 of 3: Build a Brick Fence of the Underworld
Step 1. Build a pickaxe
You'll need one to dig the bricks of the Underworld. Since the Underworld is a dangerous area, a powerful pickaxe that can dig fast will be very useful. Try to get yourself an iron pickaxe or better.
To build an iron pickaxe, place one stick in the center of the grid and another directly below it. Fill the top row with three iron ingots
Step 2. Reach the Underworld
To create a brick fence of the Underworld you need the raw material, which you can only find in the Underworld, which you must access through a portal. Read Create a Portal to the Nether in Minecraft for more instructions on how to create a portal to the Underworld.
The Underworld is a very dangerous area, so only venture there if you have the proper equipment. Be sure to bring plenty of healing items with you. Read Making Potions in Minecraft if you want a guide on how to make some healing potions
Step 3. Find a Fortress of the Underworld
These imposing structures are unmistakable in the bleak landscape of the Underworld. They usually look like bridges spanning deep ravines. The best way to find one is to travel directly east or west. If you head north or south, you could go through thousands of blocks without encountering one.
The Fortresses of the Underworld are home to Blaze and Wither skeletons, two monsters that drop valuable items when defeated
Step 4. Dig the bricks of the Underworld
Fortresses are mainly composed of this material; you can use your pickaxe to dig it. You will need at least six blocks to create a fence, although more material is required to complete larger projects.
You will get six pieces of fence for every six bricks of the Underworld (i.e. one per block). However, you must have at least six blocks to use the recipe
Step 5. Go back to the crafting table and build the fences
Once you have at least six bricks from the Underworld you can start creating your own fence. Fill the bottom two lines of the grid with blocks.
Step 6. Move the fences to your inventory
For every six blocks inserted into the grid, you will get six fence pieces.
Method 3 of 3: Finding Fences
Step 1. Bring a tool with you
You can use any tool of your choice to break through fences and collect them, including your character's hands. With a pickaxe or ax, however, the operation will be quicker.
To collect the brick fences of the Underworld you must use a pickaxe or the pieces will not fall to the ground
Step 2. Look for the wooden fences in the abandoned mines
You will often find them used as supports.
Step 3. Steal the wooden fences from the villages
You will usually find a good number of fences in villages, protecting crops and used as roof decorations. Don't worry, none of the villagers will be angry if you break the fences to collect them.
Step 4. Explore Strongholds to find fences
Libraries in underground strongholds may contain fences, used as railings and candelabra. You'll usually find a couple of them in each bookstore.
Step 5. Loot the witch's hut in the swamp
These buildings are generated with fences in the main entrance and windows.
Step 6. Break the brick fences of the Underworld in the Underworld Fortresses
In the Fortresses, in addition to finding the raw material needed to build brick fences, you can also get hold of several randomly generated fence parts. You must use the pickaxe to break these fences or you will not be able to pick them up.
Advice
- Fences automatically connect to almost every other block in the game when you place them adjacent to them, but you can also use them as stakes if you place them on their own.
- Fences are a block and a half high, so monsters and animals (except spiders) cannot jump over them.
- You can attach a leash to an enclosure to lock an animal in one area.
