Building a circular fence can help you become a more efficient horse trainer. The circular shape of the enclosure ensures a safer environment and prevents the possibility of horses running away. The circular fences can be built with wooden or metal posts and have a circumference of 15 to 24 m.
Steps
Step 1. Determine the size of your enclosure
A 15m pen is fine for training a lead horse, but if you plan to mount your horse inside the pen, a girth of 18 to 24m is recommended.
Step 2. Find a location for the enclosure
You will need a level area that is not humid.
Step 3. Measure the area where you intend to build the fence
Start in the center and use a tape measure to create a perfect circle. You need to be precise and leave enough space for the gate.
Step 4. Add soft soil to the area where you intend to build
Step 5. Start by adding a layer of gravel
Spread it out with a shovel or rake.
Step 6. Spread a layer of sand or plastic chipboard over the gravel using a rake
Step 7. Decide what material to use to build the fence
Livestock holding panels are movable and easy to assemble. Wood costs less, but requires more work and, once installed, is difficult to move.
Step 8. Determine how many panels or boards you will need to build the fence
- Multiply the fence width by 3.14 to get the circumference.
- Divide this number by the size of the panels. For example, if you are using 3m panels to build the fence, divide the circumference by 3.
Step 9. Mount the gate
It must be large enough for the horse to pass.
- Measure the width of the gate and dig 2 holes about 1m deep with an auger.
- Insert the 10 x 10 cm poles on which to mount the gate into the holes. Mount the gate.
Step 10. Move the panels to where you need them, laying them down so that the inner and outer hinges are aligned
Step 11. Raise two panels, side by side, overlapping the hinges
Step 12. Insert the panel pin between the hinges to connect them
Continue until all panels are mounted.
Step 13. Insert steel posts between the hinges of each panel with a power hammer
Building a circular fence properly requires extra support.
Step 14. Secure the panels with 0.8mm wire
Tighten it around the panels with pliers, tying it to the posts.
Part 1 of 1: Building a Circular Fence with Wood
Step 1. Dig holes with an auger, at least about 60 cm deep, depending on the length of the boards
Step 2. Place the base of the wooden posts in the ditches, perpendicular to the ground; fill the holes with earth
Step 3. Screw or nail the fence to the posts
For a circular fence, a fence between 1 and 2 meters high is fine.
Advice
- Buying a ready-made gate, complete with everything needed to mount it, is the simplest solution.
- Check the condition of the panels and posts at least once a year to make sure the fence is stable and secure.
