Templates make it easier for you to create a new Word document. Microsoft Word includes several standard templates, but sometimes you may need a different or custom template. Learn how to add new templates in Microsoft Word for Windows or Mac, to get the most out of your writing program.

Method 1 of 4: Find a Microsoft Word Template for Windows or Mac
Step 1. Search for a new model online
- Go to the Microsoft Office site and look in the "Templates" section.
- If you can't find a template that fits your purpose on the Microsoft Office website, try searching the internet for what you need (eg search for "Word Templates").
Step 2. Check the compatibility of the chosen template with your version of Microsoft Word
Step 3. Download the template to a location you can easily remember
This will be a temporary location before the model is installed.
If you couldn't find the model, read the next section; if you found what you were looking for, then skip it
Method 2 of 4: Create a New Microsoft Word Template for Windows or Mac
Step 1. Create a new Microsoft Word document
Step 2. Set all the desired features
Include font settings, borders, margins, clip art (in short, any aspect required in a complete document).
Step 3. Go to the "File" menu
Method 3 of 4: Select "Save As"
Step 1. Save the template in a location you can easily remember
This will be a temporary location before the model is installed.
Step 2. In the "Save As" dialog box, select "Word Template" from the drop down menu of the "File Type" field
Method 4 of 4: Install a Microsoft Word Template for Windows or Mac
Step 1. On your computer, find the "Templates" folder where your personal Microsoft Office templates are saved
The folder will likely be located in your Windows user's directory. If not, do a search to locate it, and note its location.
Step 2. Move the Microsoft Office templates you have downloaded or installed to the "Templates" folder
Step 3. Close and then restart Microsoft Word
The template may also appear without performing this step, however, to avoid loading errors, it is recommended that you close and reopen Word.
Step 4. In the "File" menu, select the "New" tab and then click on "Personal Templates"
Depending on your settings, when you open Word you may be automatically redirected to the "New" tab.
Step 5. Select your model from the list of personal models
A new document identical to the template will open. Changes made to this document will not be reflected in the original model.
