Rather than using a computer running Windows 7 continuously, reinstalling the operating system every 6-12 months can actively contribute to its proper functioning while always ensuring optimal performance. If you are not a computer expert, reinstalling an operating system like Windows 7 might seem like a very complicated operation. Fortunately, the procedure to follow is simple and straightforward when compared to that of older versions of Windows. In this case the risk of making a mistake is very minimal. Continue reading this article to find out how to restore or reinstall Windows 7.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Repair a Windows 7 installation
Step 1. Determine what the problem is
Before performing a fresh installation from scratch, it is a good idea to consider whether the problem can be solved by attempting to restore the current installation. In this case, the procedure will automatically replace the system files that are damaged. In most cases this solution is useful for fixing Windows 7 startup problems.
If your computer is no longer able to load and start Windows properly, performing this type of operating system recovery can fix the problem without the need to do a fresh clean installation of Windows 7
Step 2. Insert the Windows 7 installation CD-ROM into your computer's optical drive
Make sure your device is configured to hijack boot from the CD player. To do this, enter your computer's BIOS immediately after turning it on. At the bottom of the screen showing the computer or BIOS manufacturer logo is the key to press in order to enter the BIOS. Normally the keys that allow you to access the BIOS are: F2, F10, F12 or Del.
-
Once inside the BIOS, go to the boot sequence menu, then select "CD / DVD" or "Optical Drive" as the first boot device on your computer.
-
Save the new BIOS settings and close the GUI. Your computer will restart automatically.
Step 3. Launch the Windows installation wizard
Press any key on the keyboard when the message "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD …" appears on the screen. This will start the Windows 7 installation wizard. The necessary files will be loaded from the CD in a few seconds, after which you will be presented with the initial screen of the Windows installation procedure where you will be asked to select the language and the time zone. These settings should already be correct, so click the "Next" button to continue.
Step 4. Click on "Repair your computer"
It is located in the lower left corner of the screen where the "Install" button is located in the center. Selecting the indicated option will display the "System Recovery Options" dialog box.
-
The program will take a few moments to detect the disk location of the Windows 7 installation to restore. Select the latter from the list that will appear, then click on the "Next" button. In most cases, there will only be one selectable entry, as there will be only one installation of Windows 7 on the computer's hard drive.
Step 5. Choose the "Startup Repair" option
The program will start scanning Windows files for any errors. Based on the results of the analysis, some solutions may be suggested to you. Alternatively, the restore will start automatically.
-
Before selecting the "Startup Repair" option, disconnect any USB memory drives, such as thumb drives or external hard drives, from your computer.
-
The computer will automatically restart several times. When this happens, do not press any key to prevent the system from booting from the CD. If not, you will need to restore from the beginning.
Step 6. Click on the "Finish" button
When the recovery procedure is finished, click on the "Finish" button in the window that appeared on the screen to allow Windows 7 to start normally. If the startup repair procedure has solved the problem by correcting all the errors found, Windows should boot correctly without displaying the "System Recovery Options" dialog box again.
Method 2 of 4: Perform a System Configuration Restore
Step 1. Run the "System Restore" procedure
Depending on how Windows starts you will have two ways to perform System Restore.
-
If Windows has not loaded and therefore the problem persists, perform steps 2 to 4 of the previous method of the article to access the "System Recovery Options" window again, then choose the "System Restore" item.
-
If you are able to log in to Windows, click on the "Start" button to access the menu of the same name. Select the "All Programs" option, then click on the "Accessories" item. At this point select the "System Tools" folder and click on the "System Restore" icon.
Step 2. Select the restore point to use
You can choose one of the restore points that you created manually or one that is created automatically by Windows before installing specific updates or programs to perform system restore. Remember that you can restore using only one of the restore points indicated on the screen that appears.
Step 3. Click the "Next" button, then the "Finish" button
Click on the "Yes" button for final confirmation. The system will restore using the data indicated. Your computer will automatically restart during the recovery process. The recovery process may take several minutes to complete. When you log into Windows after the reset is complete, you will see a message confirming that the procedure was successful.
-
When you perform System Restore, no files are deleted from your computer.
Method 3 of 4: Perform a New Installation
Step 1. Back up all personal files and important data
Although the Windows installation procedure is safe and reliable and the risk of a critical program error occurring is very minimal, it is always best to back up all important and sensitive data before making any major changes to your computer, such as reinstalling the operating system, so you can restore them if something goes wrong. Copy all important and personal data to an external hard drive, USB memory drive or DVD.
Step 2. Get all the tools you need to install the operating system
The most important information is the Windows 7 product key. It should be found on the installation CD / DVD case or on an adhesive label affixed directly to the computer. Create a list of all the programs that are currently installed on your system and that you want to keep, so that you can install them again after reinstalling Windows 7.
Step 3. Start the Windows 7 installation
Insert the installation disc into your computer's optical drive and reboot the system. Make sure the BIOS is configured to boot the device from the CD / DVD drive. You can check this by referring to step number 2 of the first method of the article.
Step 4. Start the installation
You will need to set some configuration options related to the installation, such as language and time zone, and you will need to accept Microsoft's agreement for the use of its licensed products. If you do not accept the terms of the agreement that will be proposed to you, you will not be able to continue with the installation of Windows 7.
Step 5. Choose the type of installation you want to perform
After the first step of the installation procedure you will be asked to choose one of the following options: Update or Personalized. Choose installation Personalized as it is the one that will allow you to format the hard drive of your computer and to perform a fresh installation of Windows 7.
Step 6. Format the hard drive where you want to install Windows and reinstall the operating system
Remember that formatting a memory drive deletes all data within it, preparing it for reinstalling the operating system. While formatting your hard drive isn't a necessary step, it's always best to do it when you want to reinstall an operating system to avoid potential future system problems. Normally Windows is installed on the main drive of a computer which is labeled with the drive letter "C:". Windows 7 installation can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete.
Step 7. Complete the installation by doing the initial system setup
When the Windows 7 installation is complete, you will need to go through a few additional steps, such as giving your computer a name and creating your user account. Normally, in most cases, the default name that is assigned to the computer will be fine. Once you have created a user account you will be able to log into Windows 7 and start using the system as you normally do.
Step 8. Restore your personal data and reinstall any programs you normally use
If you backed up your documents and files before you started, now is the time to transfer them back to your computer's hard drive. If you have created a list of all the programs that were previously installed on your computer and that you want to keep, you can reinstall them.
Method 4 of 4: Using the Recovery Console
Step 1. Try using this recovery tool built into the operating system if you don't want to reinstall Windows 7 from scratch
Press the "F8" function key repeatedly while the computer is starting up to access the recovery console of the Windows installation wizard.
- Note: Not all versions of Windows 7 come with this system feature, but it's a great troubleshooting tool, so it's always good to check if you can use it before experimenting with other solutions.
- You can access the Windows "Command Prompt" directly from the recovery console to fix computer problems that cannot be solved any other way. In this specific case it explains how to repair the boot sector of the hard drive named MBR (from English "Master Boot Record").
Step 2. Access the recovery console by pressing the F8 function key while the computer is starting up
Press the indicated key repeatedly so that Windows is able to detect it during the boot phase.
Step 3. Press the Enter key when the screen appears Reset the computer.
Step 4. Click on the blue link Command Prompt.
Step 5. Type the following command:
- bootrec / rebuildbcd;
- Press the button Enter.
Step 6. Type the following command:
- bootrec / fixmbr;
- Press the button Enter.
Step 7. Type the following command:
- bootrec / fixboot;
- Press the button Enter.
- The sequence of commands provided can solve any problem with the boot sector of your computer's hard drive. However, remember that not all versions of Windows 7 have the recovery console built into them.
