Many modern home electronic devices, such as smartphones, televisions, computers and video games, can connect to the Internet. Once you have a high-speed Internet provider, such as broadband cable, you can connect devices wirelessly so they can connect to the Internet from any room. You can learn how to set up Wi-Fi at home by hooking up a wireless router to your modem.
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Part 1: Connecting to the Internet
Step 1. Verify that all devices you want to use are enabled for a wireless connection
Most devices purchased since the mid-2000s usually support Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi enabled devices aren't limited to laptops and smart phones. Televisions, video streaming devices (Roku, iPad, etc.) and gaming devices can all be set up on a local area network (LAN) Wi-Fi
Step 2. Sign a contract for a high-speed Internet connection
These monthly services can generally cost from 30 to 100 euros per month and allow you to set up a Wi-Fi connection, in addition to a cable connection, for any computer you want to use to connect to the Internet.
Make sure your Internet Service Provider (ISP) installs an Internet modem for you before attempting to connect to a Wi-Fi network. You will then need to connect the modem to the wireless router
Method 2 of 5: Part 2: Wireless Router
Step 1. Purchase a wireless router to connect to the Internet
You can buy a router on the Internet, in tech stores, like ePrice, or in megastores like Unieuro or Mediaworld.
Step 2. Choose the type of wireless router based on your Internet connection and your use of it
- Buy a wireless 802.11N, if you have average internet usage and have fast enough broadband. This type can use 2, 4 or 5 gigahertz connections.
- Buy an 802.11B or G model if you know your internet connection is only 2.4 gigahertz and you have no desire to upgrade to a faster one in the future.
- Consider buying an 802.11AC wireless router if you spend a lot of time on the internet and are always looking for a much faster connection.
Step 3. Purchase a wireless network adapter if you have a computer without a wireless card
If your desktop or laptop is older than 2006, you may need to install a card or purchase a USB adapter.
Method 3 of 5: Part 3: Wireless Network
Step 1. Turn off your ISP's modem
This is the small device they installed for you to connect your home to the Internet service.
Disconnect the power only. Do not disconnect the Internet cable from the wall
Step 2. Connect the wireless router to the power cord
Make sure you have space near the modem. A light should illuminate when the power is turned on.
Step 3. Connect the wireless router to the modem with an Ethernet cable
This is the cable that can be plugged into most computers to connect to the Internet. They will snap into their slots if properly inserted.
- If you previously used an Ethernet cable to connect the modem to a desktop computer, you must remove it and connect it to the wireless router instead. You can use the wireless adapter to connect to the Wi-Fi connection.
- If you were using a router to connect to the internet, your wireless router can be replaced.
Step 4. Reconnect the modem to the wall
Wait a few minutes while it starts up.
Method 4 of 5: Part 4: Configure the Wireless Network
Step 1. Find the instruction manual of the wireless router
It should tell you a URL to type in to set up and configure the wireless connection.
Step 2. Go to your Internet browser on a computer that will be Wi-Fi enabled
Type the URL as indicated by the manual.
You should use the computer you intend to use as the primary computer in the wireless network. For example, you can choose your desktop computer rather than a small laptop because you may have more regular access to it
Step 3. Follow the instructions in the manual to set your username and password
You must choose a name for the connection, called the SSID, that is unique.
Step 4. Follow the instructions to set a security key
This will make sure that only people in your family can access the network and the connection.
Method 5 of 5: Part 5: Connecting the Device
Step 1. Install wireless network cards on devices that need them, if you don't already have them
Step 2. Log in to a device you want to connect with
Step 3. Click the Network, Airport or Wireless Connection menu
Step 4. Select SSID
Enter your password. You should be logged in.
