This wikiHow teaches you how to use two Safari apps or tabs at the same time by displaying them side by side on an iPad screen. This feature is known as "Split View" and is only available on iPad Air 2, Pro and Mini 4 (or later) models and only on devices running iOS 10 (or later).
Steps
Method 1 of 2: View Two Applications Side by Side
Step 1. Go to the iPad Settings app
It features a gray gear icon (⚙️) and is normally visible on the device's Home screen.
Step 2. Select the General option
It's located at the top of the "Settings" menu, next to the gear icon (⚙️).
Step 3. Tap the Multitasking item
It is located at the top of the appeared menu.
Step 4. Activate the "Allow multiple apps" slider by moving it to the right
It will take on a green color. When this feature is on, you have the option to open two applications and use them at the same time by viewing them side by side on the screen.
Step 5. Press the Home button of the device
It has a circular shape and is located at the bottom of the front of the iPad, exactly below the screen.
Step 6. Hold the device horizontally
The "Allow multiple apps" mode only works when the iPad screen is oriented horizontally.
Step 7. Launch an application
Select the first of the two programs you want to use at the same time.
Step 8. Swipe your finger across the screen to the left
Start on the right side of the device, then move your finger gently to the left. You will see a new tab appear in the middle right of the screen.
Step 9. Drag the new tab to the left until you reach the center of the screen
This will reduce the size of the app window you have open. A list of applications will be displayed in the created panel on the right side of the screen.
If another application automatically appears in the right pane, close it by sliding your finger across the screen from the top to the bottom to display the application list
Step 10. See the list of available apps
Swipe it down with your finger until you find the icon of the second program you want to run.
Remember that not all apps are compatible with the iPad's "Allow multiple apps" mode of operation. Only applications designed to take advantage of this display mode will be available in the list that appears
Step 11. Tap the icon of the app you want to open
In this way the selected program will run inside the right pane of the screen.
- To change the app visible on the right side of the screen, close the running one by sliding your finger from top to bottom, then choose the new program to run.
- To disable the "Allow multiple apps" mode of operation, press and hold the gray bar that separates the two running application windows, then drag it to the side of the screen where the program you want to close is visible.
Method 2 of 2: View Two Safari Tabs Simultaneously
Step 1. Hold the device horizontally
Safari's "Split View" mode only works when the iPad screen is oriented horizontally.
Step 2. Launch Safari
It features a white icon with a blue compass inside.
Step 3. Press and hold your finger on the button that allows you to manage the open tabs
It features an icon consisting of two squares, which overlap, and is positioned in the upper right corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear.
Step 4. Choose the Open Split View option
It is the first menu item that appeared. At this point on the device screen you will see two Safari tabs side by side.
- Alternatively, drag one of the open tabs from the top of the screen to the right. By doing so, the "Split View" display mode will be activated automatically by displaying two tabs side by side on the screen.
- To deactivate the "Split View" mode, keep your finger pressed on the button that allows you to manage the open tabs visible in the lower right corner of both browser windows, then choose the option Merge all the panels. This way all open tabs will be displayed within a single Safari window as they normally do. Alternatively you can choose the option Close [number] panels to close all open tabs and display the window that has remained in full screen mode.
