Have you always dreamed of becoming a florist but are not sure you know where to start? Read on.
Steps
Step 1. Search for a school or floral design course in the area where you live
Use your favorite search engine or, better yet, ask your trusted florist for advice, they will most likely be able to point you to the best opportunities available.
Step 2. Contact the identified school and find out what the entry requirements, costs, enrollment dates, etc. are
Step 3. Find out if the school also offers short courses in floral creativity
It could be a great way to get started without having to shell out large sums to take a full course.
Step 4. If you decide that you really want to take the path to become a florist, sign up for the school and pay the required fees
Step 5. Study hard, be creative and try to connect with local florists by visiting them regularly
Step 6. After you graduate and earn the coveted certificate, submit your resume to the florists you would like to work with
Most schools will try to offer you a job position before the end of the courses.
Step 7. Be creative during interviews
Potential employers will ask you to create a flower arrangement, don't propose something trivial. Be different, they will pay you to be creative, so creating arrangements that any florist could offer will not impress them in any way.
Advice
- Some schools will offer the option of paying in installments rather than upfront.
- Social contacts are very important, visit local florists to try to make friends. Many job vacancies are not advertised and positions are filled through word of mouth and friendships.
