Enter a Karate Dojo with a tightly knotted belt! You will show your instructor that you are ready to learn! There are numerous techniques for tying the karate belt and you should ask your teacher which one is used in his school. To get started, here are two methods.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Use the Left End
Step 1. Place the belt transversely to your body, above the navel
The right end should be shorter; its length should be only 5 cm greater than that of the flap that you will want that will fall once the knot is tightened. This end will remain stationary for most of the procedure.
Step 2. Wrap the left end around the waist
Make sure that the right end remains stationary on the navel without changing in length.
Step 3. Place the long end over the short one and hold this intersection above the navel
When the long flap passes in front of the belly and crosses the beginning, pass it over the waistband.
Step 4. Wrap the long end around the body a second time, overlapping it on the first "layer"
Based on your waist circumference and belt length, you may not be able to close this second loop or even be forced to do three. A well-knotted belt should make two turns.
Step 5. Bring the long end towards the center of the abdomen
At this point the belt should be well positioned around the waist; the time has come to tie it.
Step 6. Put the long end over the short one
The latter should point towards your right.
Step 7. Push the long part under both layers of the belt
You should insert it from top to bottom.
Step 8. Grab both ends and pull them
You should have done about half the knot, check that the two ends are the same length.
Step 9. Cross the two flaps together
You need to close a simple knot.
Step 10. Pull the long end over the other and pass it inside the circle that was formed thanks to the intersection
This procedure corresponds exactly to the classic knot.
Step 11. Tighten the knot
Pull the two ends until the knot closes right in the center of the belt.
Step 12. Secure and adjust the position of the knot
Make sure it is not loose to prevent the belt from unfastening during training.
Method 2 of 2: Use Both Ends
Step 1. Fold the belt exactly in half to find the center
This method uses the same type of knot as the previous one, but the belt is wrapped around the body differently.
Step 2. Rest the center of the belt on the navel
The two halves must be equal to each other.
Step 3. Wrap the two ends around your waist by crossing them behind your back and then bringing them back forward
You will need to reverse the hands with which you grab them behind you. Make sure the belt overlaps itself. Grab it where the two ends meet in front of you.
Step 4. Fold the left end down, passing it under the two layers of the belt
Keep the latter well centered and make sure that this part of the knot is tight.
Step 5. Cross the ends and fold the left one under the right one to tie a square knot
Secure the knot well and check that the belt is well centered on the abdomen.
