Some cats don't drink enough. This causes urinary tract distress, problems with the use of the litter box, breathing problems and laziness. Also, outdoor cats have a hard time drinking in cold weather. Here are some useful tips to reduce these problems.
Steps
Step 1. Use glass or stainless steel bowls
Some cats dislike drinking from plastic dishes or vases. This is why some cats like to drink straight from the faucet or bathtub. If you want to continue using plastic dishes or vases, also use different glass or stainless steel containers.
Step 2. Wash the water container thoroughly every day
Step 3. Use different containers to provide your cat with water even when cleaning the container
Step 4. Make "soup" for your cat
Use cat food and mix it with water. Mix it well. Many cats love this type of meal. It is especially recommended for cats that live outdoors especially in cold periods when the water is frozen. Consuming water will make your cat fitter. Discard the remains of the soup.
Step 5. If your cat does not like canned food, add some water to the dry food, let the water be absorbed and then let the cat eat
Step 6. If your cat loves milk, add a few tablespoons to the water to make it tastier
Step 7. Add ice cubes to the food so your cat can lick them while eating
Step 8. Put the cat on the sink to see if he drinks from the tap
Fresh tap water is often better than stale water! If your cat likes to play with water, you can use a garden hose or drinking fountain.
Advice
If the water freezes, use a stainless steel container and not a glass one. If there is an electrical outlet nearby, you can invest in a heated bowl. Many of these are plastic but you can also use a stainless steel one next to it. Put some water around the stainless steel bowl and inside it so the heat will be conducted through the water
Warnings
- Consult a veterinarian for more information on cat water consumption.
- If your cat has diarrhea due to the soup, consult your vet.
