Although they have a reputation for being weird and goofy, geeks - or computer geeks - are highly intelligent and knowledgeable people in the fields of computer science, science, mathematics and astronomy. Theirs might be a rewarding lifestyle, but it's like a snow avalanche: if you pile up some snow and go down to the valley, the snowball will get bigger and bigger. This article will help you launch yourself from the top of the mountain.
Skip the fence of mediocrity and go to the top step.
Steps
Step 1. Achieve some mastery of the basics
-
The email address is the basic requirement for all geeks (Gmail is recommended as it is associated with Google+ and other free services, including video chat).
Even better, create an email within your website (see below)
- You should also have a Facebook account to be able to interact with geeks from all over the world.
- You should create a personal website.
- Purchase at least 5 pieces of geek clothing and 5 other items that could be considered "geek".
- On YouTube, the largest video sharing site, it's important to be a regular who constantly adds footage. Your videos can be about computer repairs, hacking, or anything else that highlights your geeky activities! Create an account and try to become famous on the internet and YouTube!
- You don't have to worry about what others will think about your new lifestyle - it's a mistake many geeks make in their early days. Geeks don't care who loves who or who has the most expensive shoes. They just don't care.
Step 2. If you haven't chosen your favorite theme yet, decide what you want to be "obsessed" with
Think long and hard, because you will probably spend your entire life on this topic. It can be very specific, for example about Marie Antoinette, or as wide as the space, or it could be about the need to accomplish something (for example, Bill Gates developed the personal computer). If you choose a specific topic, you will need to deepen it, for example by learning the exact dates of the most important events.
Step 3. Subscribe to a specialized magazine or newspaper
Nuts & Volts, PC World, Mac World, and Cinefex all fall into this category. Read each issue from top to bottom, identifying at least three words you've never heard of before. Memorize them and try to use them often.
Step 4. Buy at least three small electronic devices
Attach them to any most appropriate part of your clothing. Avoid mundane things, like MP3 players, and get something as unique as a universal TV remote.
Step 5. Learn programming languages C ++, Java, Visual Basic or any other
After you become familiar with computer languages, such as C ++, Java, Python, Perl and the like, move on to those of web programming, such as JavaScript, HTML, XML, PHP, ASP and CSS. Learn more about the use of languages: learn the history of the programming language and how it can be applied in real life. If you use Facebook or MySpace, learn the source code to create great applications, such as FBML for example.
Step 6. Learn as much as you can about computers and electronics
Know your operating system inside and out and study other operating systems. Learn how computers work; if possible, get one and assemble it again. Learn to make a computer from scratch and build a PC yourself.
Step 7. Read, but not in fits and starts
Read at least ten classic works, such as "The Miserable", "War and Peace" or "Germany: A Winter Fairy Tale". Also read books that have to do with your topic. Go to the library and borrow at least six books related to your subject or one of classical literature (see above). So, go back to the library when you run out of them and get six more and so on.
Step 8. Watch cult movies the way true geeks do, namely Star Wars (the original version), Star Trek, Doctor Who and The Lord of the Rings
Step 9. Make friends with other geeks
The best way to become one of them is to be friends with a geek. Together you can learn and teach each other computer and electronics concepts and content, and have fun doing geeky things. Better yet, make friends with different geeks and take part in their activities. However, don't just hang out with these kinds of people. It will be better to have geeky friends and others (or many) who are not.
Advice
- There are many places to shop for tech-freak clothing, such as ThinkGeek.com.
- Treat unpopularity as a benefit. You can do the craziest things you want, without worrying about your reputation.
- A universal remote control for TV is very useful: you can turn off televisions of any brand. It will be very useful for turning off the TV in tech stores, while others try video games. You can buy it on Amazon.com.
Warnings
- If you're not a geek at heart, it's risky to try and become one. You will likely end up turning into a loser. The most genuine geek essence is only accessible to those who were born to be geeks.
- If you are not allowed, please do not engage in tech piracy. You risk getting yourself in trouble huge.
