Maybe you accidentally dyed your hair the wrong color or maybe your natural color is a darker tone than you would like. However, there are several tricks (completely natural or not) that you can try to lighten them.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Go to the hairdresser
Step 1. Find out about possible damage
Many people who have dark hair bleach or dye it in a salon. Before deciding whether to undergo this treatment, discuss the possible damage with a hairdresser.
- If you dye them a platinum blonde, there will inevitably be damage. If you have colored them in the past, your hairdresser may also refuse to dye them platinum blonde, as the damage could be substantial.
- Discuss with your hairdresser how you want to lighten your hair. He can evaluate the current state of the hair and determine which treatment will damage it the least possible.
Step 2. Don't touch the roots
Discoloration and tinting do more damage when done near the scalp and follicles. Before repeating the dye, try to grow the roots slightly. This can help reduce the damage.
Step 3. After dyeing, give your hair special care
If you decide to color them in a salon, then you will have to take special care of them later. Ask the hairdresser how to pamper them after the treatment.
- Ask him to recommend moisturizing balms and other home treatments. Dye can make hair drier than usual.
- Before shampooing, you may want to apply a pre-wash primer. It can help block water, making the dye last longer.
- Consider coconut oil or protein based conditioners. They can allow you to remedy the damage caused by dye and discoloration.
Part 2 of 3: Using Home Remedies
Step 1. Use vinegar and water
Doing a rinse with this solution helps lighten the hair in some cases. Try mixing one part vinegar and six parts water, then let the solution sit on your hair for 15 minutes. Apple cider vinegar can be more effective and smells pleasant.
Step 2. Use the salt
Classic table salt can alter hair color. Many people notice that their hair becomes lighter after swimming in the sea. Try mixing one part of salt with five parts of water. Pour the solution into your hair and let it sit for 15 minutes. Rinse and wash them as usual.
Step 3. Crumble some vitamin C tablets and mix the powder with the shampoo
Vitamin C can lighten your hair and also make it healthier overall. Take eight or nine tablets, which you can buy at the pharmacy, and crumble them. You can do this by putting them in a plastic bag, and then pulverize them by running a rolling pin over them. Mix the powder with the shampoo. Wash your hair with this product for a few weeks and see if it works.
Step 4. Use diced rhubarb
Rhubarb is a plant characterized by properties that can naturally lighten hair. Mix 30 grams of cubed rhubarb with two glasses of water. Bring the liquid to a boil and let it cool. Filter the rhubarb and rinse your hair with this solution. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then wash it off with water.
Step 5. If dyes and chemical treatments aren't your thing, you can try honey:
many swear it is a marvel for naturally lightening hair. It is extremely moisturizing, but it also contains small traces of hydrogen peroxide, which can help lighten dark hair.
- Before applying it to your hair, mix it with water or vinegar. Honey is sticky and difficult to rinse off, so you need to dilute it for optimal application.
- Coat your hair with the honey and water or vinegar solution. Put on a shower cap and leave it on overnight. Rinse it off in the morning and see if it has worked.
Step 6. Use lemon or lime juice
Citrus fruits can lighten dark hair, so try using them for this purpose.
- You can mix 60 milliliters of warm water and 250 milliliters of lemon juice. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray it on your hair. Reapply approximately every 30 minutes and see if you can notice any differences a few days later. When doing this treatment, make sure you moisturize your hair regularly, as lemon juice can dry out your hair.
- You can squeeze limes into warm water and pour the solution into a spray bottle. Spray it on your hair and cover it with a shower cap. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then rinse it off and see if it has worked.
Step 7. Treat your hair with chamomile tea
This plant also has lightening properties. Make a chamomile tea and let it cool, then pour it over your hair, soaking it as much as possible. Put on a tight shower cap, leave on for 30 minutes and rinse.
Step 8. Lighten your hair with cinnamon
This product is also an excellent natural lightener. Dampen your hair and apply conditioner so the cinnamon has a base to adhere to. Make a thick cinnamon and water mixture. Work it into your hair, covering it as evenly as possible. Put on a shower cap and leave it on overnight.
Step 9. Use hydrogen peroxide
It's a pretty strong chemical that can lighten your hair. Use it with extreme caution. Pour the hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle and spray it evenly on your hair. If necessary, collect the hair with tongs to reach the most difficult places. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then rinse it off with cold water.
Part 3 of 3: Lighten Dyed Hair
Step 1. Use a neutralizing shampoo
If the color doesn't suit you, massage this product into your hair as soon as possible. Neutralizing shampoos contain fairly effective surfactants that can eliminate dirt, chemicals and pigments.
- You can find it in a perfumery or other cosmetic store. Follow the instructions on the package to apply it correctly.
- Neutralizing shampoos can dry out your hair. Be sure to moisturize them afterwards to prevent them from drying out and cracking.
Step 2. Remove semi-permanent dyes with vitamin C powder and shampoo solution
If the neutralizing shampoo doesn't work, you can remove a semi-permanent tint by mixing some vitamin C powder with your usual shampoo. This can help lighten the hair by removing some of the pigment.
- You can buy vitamin C powder online or at a pharmacy. Mix one part of vitamin C with two of shampoos. Moisten your hair and massage the product into a lather. Put on a shower cap. Place a towel over your shoulders to keep it from dripping and leave on for about an hour.
- After an hour, rinse your hair and let it dry. If this method works, it will eliminate about 85% of the color. Afterwards, you may want to moisturize them to prevent them from drying out.
Step 3. If you have dyed your hair at home, contact the company that manufactured the product
You can find the phone number on the paint box. Receptionists are constantly getting questions about this, so they may give you helpful tips on how to remove the color.
Step 4. Use baking soda
It can help eliminate chemical buildup from your hair. Mixing it with shampoo or conditioner can help remove the dye. Compared to other methods, it can take a little longer to take effect. Using it once a week can gradually lighten dyed hair.
