Upgrading your wardrobe is a never-ending process, however, knowing where to start is already a step forward. Consider how to upgrade your wardrobe, get rid of the clothes you hate, and slowly introduce new and better clothes to replace them.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Evaluate Your Wardrobe
Determine which parts of your wardrobe are most in need of improvement.
Step 1. Go through your closet
Separate the clothes into three piles: the ones you adore, the ones you don't like, and the ones you feel indifferent to.
Step 2. Think about why you love some items
Some clothes may have sentimental value, but often, your favorite clothes are the ones that look good on you.
- Evaluate your favorite clothes and find the characteristics they have in common in terms of style and shape.
- Have a little fashion show for yourself. If you're not sure why you love a particular garment, try it on and look at yourself in a full-length mirror.
Step 3. Eliminate the clothes you hate
If you can't stand a garment anymore and if you don't wear it anymore, storing it will only worsen your general opinion about the wardrobe.
- Throw away any clothes with holes in them or stained.
- Donate clothes in good condition to charities or second-hand clothing stores.
- Store sentimental clothes in a box. If some items have sentimental value but you don't like how they dress, keep them in a box and separate it from the rest of your wardrobe.
Step 4. Evaluate the clothes you feel indifferent to
Determine which items look good on you and which ones don't.
- Eliminate items that make you look scruffy and age you.
- Keep simple items that look good on you or have potential. These garments can be revived.
- Keep your clothes comfortable. While a loose fit t-shirt and sweatpants aren't trendy, they are perfect for wearing around the house. Provided these items don't excel in your wardrobe, having one or two is not a problem.
Method 2 of 4: Know Your Body
Before you can improve your wardrobe, you need to know how to choose clothes that fit you well.
Step 1. Take your measurements
Even if you have recently measured yourself, do it again for more accurate data.
- Measure your bust. Wrap a tape measure around the fullest part of the torso, keeping it taut and parallel to the floor.
- Measure the waist. Wrap the measuring tape around the "natural waist", which is the narrowest part of the waist which is usually just below the bust. Keep the tape straight and parallel to the floor.
- Measure your hips. Bring your feet together and wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of your hips, keeping it taut and parallel to the floor.
Step 2. Identify the critical areas
Almost all women are unhappy with some parts of their body. Determine which aspects you dislike so that you can take action to hide them.
Step 3. Identify the aspects of your body that you like
We all have physical qualities to emphasize. Maintain a positive attitude and decide which traits you want to accentuate.
Step 4. Know your body type
There are five basic shapes: pear, apple, inverted triangle, hourglass and ruler.
- Go in front of a full-length mirror with no clothes on.
- Focus on the outline of the torso. Start from the natural waist and mentally trace the shape of the rib cage outline.
- Starting at the natural waist, visualize the contours extending to the hips.
Method 3 of 4: Revive Old Heads
Repair old clothes and make them more interesting with accessories.
Step 1. Go to the seamstress
Some garments, even if not perfect, may still have potential.
- Repair unstitched hems and loose seams.
- Shorten the hem of trousers or skirts that do not suit you.
- If your weight has changed, get a garment that you like a lot to stretch or tighten.
Step 2. Embellish with accessories and jewelry
Any dress can be transformed from banal to fabulous with the addition of a touch of elegance.
- Look for accessories that are old but still trendy in the jewelry box.
- Buy some new jewelry. Look for intriguing accessories and even pieces you may not have bought in the past.
- Buy jewelry that matches your clothes.
- Look for bright, brightly colored jewelry to embellish neutral-colored clothing.
- Consider some staple pieces, like diamonds or pearls, for special occasions.
Step 3. Add style and color to the clothes with the shoes
- Buy a pair of trendy heeled shoes, ballet flats or brightly colored sandals to brighten up neutral outfits.
- Also buy some neutral-colored heels that you can combine with many dresses.
Step 4. Invest in other accessories
Don't limit your choice of accessories to shoes and jewelry.
- Try on different hats. Not everyone wears the same type of hat, however it is almost always possible to find at least one style that suits you.
- Consider buying a long and trendy scarf with the style you like.
- Look for a plain, neutral-colored belt. Belts can change the look of a garment by accentuating the narrowest part of the waist.
- Spin the bags. If you have several bags, wear one you haven't used in a long time.
- If you only have one bag and have been using it for a long time, buy a new one.
Method 4 of 4: Buying New Clothes
Gradually introduce new items into the wardrobe to improve overall quality.
Step 1. Look for ideas outside the closet
- Look at fashion magazines and choose the outfits you like best.
- Cut some photos and use them as a guide to help you choose clothes when you go shopping.
Step 2. Buy the essentials
If you don't have basics in your closet, it's time to add them.
- Buy at least one pair of classic blue jeans (e.g. boot-cut) that fit you perfectly.
- Buy a pair of dress pants with an inner lining and a soft material.
- Consider a simple, neutral-colored skirt that looks good on you. Straight skirts up to the knee are suitable for most body types and can usually be made more or less elegant depending on the occasion.
- Buy several tops or tank tops to wear under short jackets and blouses.
- Also get a fitted white shirt with buttons.
- Consider buying a blazer or jacket to match with different blouses.
Step 3. Choose "fun" clothes
The point is to improve your wardrobe and not keep it the same.
- Look for garments with bold patterns and colors that you find interesting, even if you wouldn't usually buy them.
- Choose a fashion of the moment that you like and buy a garment of that type.
Step 4. Buy clothes that emphasize your body type
- If you have a pear-shaped body, accentuate the top with boldly colored and patterned shirts with distinctive necklines.
- If, on the other hand, you have an apple-shaped body, hide the central part with an empire-cut top and wide skirts.
- If you have an inverted triangle-shaped body, create lower curves by wearing baggy pants. For example, flared jeans and skirts in bright, fluttering colors or patterns.
- Add curves if your body is in the shape of a ruler with prints, fabrics, colors, layers and other details.
- Accentuate the waist with voluminous skirts, crop tops at the waist, and hugging fabrics if you have the hourglass body.
Step 5. Look for clothes you love
Do not buy other neutral garments for which you will only feel indifferent. If you don't like wearing a dress, don't buy it and save your money to buy something you really like.
Advice
- Buy new accessories and clothes little by little. Buy one or the items at a time so as not to spend all the money and not to lose your head!
- Recycle old clothes by turning them into accessories. For example, use the fabric of an old sweater to make a bag, a fabric belt or a scarf.
