German cockroach is a fairly common type of cockroach found in homes and restaurants. You can kill her by using gel baits, poisoning stations with bait or sticky traps, but boric acid is also effective for this purpose; if the infestation is severe, you can use a combination of several methods. Put the bait in a dark area of the kitchen or bathroom, such as behind the refrigerator, oven, toilet or inside the kitchen or bathroom cabinets.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Lure Traps
Step 1. Use a gel bait
This type of bait is sold in tubes to be squeezed to release the gel. Apply it along the door and window coverings, behind the garbage can and along the doors of the kitchen and bathroom cabinets; also distribute it under the sink and sink, where the water pipe enters the wall.
- Apply it in the cracks and crevices of the pantry drawers in the kitchen, along the kitchen counter and on the baseboard.
- If you have children or pets, be sure to spread the gel in areas they cannot reach.
Step 2. Try poisoning stations
These are plastic boxes containing poison; the cockroaches enter it through small holes and eat the bait; Make sure to place them against the walls and in the corners of areas where the infestation seems worst to you, such as in the kitchen or bathroom.
- Put them behind the refrigerator, microwave, oven, toaster, toilet and near the main kitchen and bathroom appliances; also place some under the dishwasher, refrigerator, oven, washing machine, dryer and water heater.
- Identify the busiest areas by looking for the feces of these insects, which resemble ground black pepper.
Step 3. Use sticky traps
They contain pheromones that attract cockroaches; when they enter the trap, they stick together and suffocate. You can also place such traps along walls and in corners where you most notice their presence.
- Place them in the same places where you installed the poisoning stations.
- Do not treat these types of traps with an insecticide or cleaning product, because the substances contained in them can contaminate the bait and if the latter are polluted, the insects will not enter.
Method 2 of 3: Using Boric Acid
Step 1. Use a bulb syringe to apply the acid powder
This accessory allows you to spread a thin layer of acid in the points you want; crush it to distribute the powder along the floors and walls of the kitchen and bathroom; the acid should be barely visible to the naked eye. Do not overdo the quantity, otherwise the cockroaches are able to recognize it and may avoid approaching that area.
- Do not use a spoon to apply the product.
- You can purchase the acid at major hardware stores.
- Be careful not to spread it on the kitchen counter, especially if you are preparing meals.
Step 2. Spread it in the gaps
Make a large enough hole in the plasterboard wall so that you can insert the tip of the bulb syringe into it. Insert the latter into the hole and squeeze it to distribute the acid inside the wall.
Since cockroaches tend to live in these areas, this is the most effective technique for killing them
Step 3. Use boric acid in conjunction with gel baits and poisoning stations
However, do not combine it with adhesive traps, as the latter prevent insects from re-entering their nest, which is instead useful for spreading the acid to other cockroaches.
Method 3 of 3: Prevent the Infestation
Step 1. Disinfect the kitchen surfaces
Remove any food residue and clean all spills from the countertop, table, sink, stove and other surfaces in the cooking area. Also, be sure to sweep the floor in the kitchen, dining room, and other rooms where you eat at least five times a week (if not every day).
- Don't leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight.
- Empty the garbage bag every night and close the bucket with an airtight lid.
Step 2. Store food in sealed containers
Store flour, sugar, biscuits, bread, cereals, crackers, and other foods in well-sealed containers; in this way you avoid that the cockroaches can smell and infest the kitchen.
Step 3. Seal the holes and cracks
Use foam foam to close cracks, holes, crevices, and cracks around pipes that run under the kitchen and bathroom sink.
Expanded foam is on sale in major hardware stores
Advice
- You can also try to kill these cockroaches with a mixture of sugar and baking soda. Mix the two substances in equal parts and pour the mixture into the lid of a four-liter jar; put the lid on the bathroom and kitchen areas where you saw the cockroaches. When the insects go to eat in the lid, their stomach substances react with the baking soda, causing their stomach to explode. It may take several weeks before the entire infestation can be eradicated with this method.
- Check inside the small appliances to see if the cockroaches have found a home in these accessories; put the appliance in a plastic bag in the freezer overnight to kill insects; in the end, don't forget to wash and rinse it thoroughly.
- Boric acid is mildly toxic to pets, children and adults.
- If the cockroach infestation is particularly severe, contact a specialist company.
