Here is a basic guide for how to plant a beautiful garden.
Steps
Step 1. Buy the seeds
You can find very cheap ones at your neighborhood market. Alternatively, you can start with bedding plants (or seedlings).
Step 2. Find a place in your garden or community space in your area that has both sun and shade
Ideally, some areas should be in full sun (6 hours continue of sun per day), and others with partial sun (either the sun in flashes, or full sun for less than 6 hours a day). Although some areas of the garden are always in the shade, there are a variety of plants (including green plants and even flowers) that can still bloom.
Step 3. Prepare the ground
There are at least two ways to do this.
-
Dig up and remove all dirt up to about 60cm deep. Add some compost and mix it into the soil. This can be a very tiring job and often requires the use of specific equipment. Sometimes this work can be ineffective, especially if you live in a new suburban area where all of the good surface soil has probably been taken before you start building houses.
-
Build a box and fill it with good soil.
Step 4. Sow the seedlings
Read the instructions on the package of seeds, or on the label of the plastic jar. It may be necessary to ask experts when is the best time to plant them, if it is not indicated on the instructions. You can plant them when you are sure the time is right. Some seeds (such as tomatoes) should be planted indoors, in small pots or trays, before the last frost, and transplanted outdoors only when the weather gets milder.
Step 5. Water the plants every other day
Don't drown them in water.
Step 6. Watch your beautiful garden grow
Step 7. Finished
Advice
- Have fun!
- If you live near a horse farm, find out if they can sell you horse manure compost. This is a great fertilizer!
- Annual = must be planted annually.
- Putting leftover coffee grounds around vegetables in the garden is a natural way to keep snails and other "pests" away. In addition, they add beauty to the garden.
- You don't necessarily have to plant the flowers in rows, braiding patterns usually look very pretty too.
- You don't need a huge space to plant a good amount of plants, flowers, vegetables or herbs. Many interesting gardens can also be grown in various containers.
- In most locations, dark green leafy vegetables continue to grow until frost arrives.
- Perennial = blooms every year.
- Place plant nutrients or compost in the hole with the seed or seedling to help stabilize them.
- Making a compost pile is a free and eco-friendly way to feed your garden.
- Learn how to make compost and use it as a material to enrich the soil!
- Do not eliminate or kill earthworms! They help aerate the soil and facilitate plant growth. Put them back in the ground when you see them come out.
- Using the pickaxe is a great way to break through hard ground. As well as the pitchfork or the shovel.
- Be creative or classic. Personalize your garden.
- If you add flowers to the garden, you can attract bees and other pollinators.
- If you want to plant vegetables, you don't always have to start with the seed. You can plant most vegetables that have begun to "rot" because they have adult roots. Or there are nurseries that sell "starts".
Warnings
- Don't use too much fertilizer.
- Use pesticides sparingly. Check what types of insects / animals feed on pests such as aphids and try to encourage them to stay in your garden.
- When using organic fertilizers like Miracle-Gro, don't overdo it! They could cause root burns, because the dough is too strong for the plant. Always read the instructions on the back of the package to avoid this inconvenience.
- Watch out for pesky animals and birds that will try to eat your garden seeds. To avoid problems with them, put a fence.
- Make sure people who use tools and equipment to get faster results when working the land are properly informed to prevent them from getting hurt.
