Cabbage is considered a hardy plant suitable for cold climates, and can be planted in both early spring and autumn. There are many varieties and colors of cabbage, a vegetable rich in vitamins C and E, beta carotene and fiber. One of the most important things is to ensure that these plants have slow and undisturbed growth. After you read the following steps on how to grow cabbage, you will be well on your way to enjoying this delicious vegetable.
Steps
Step 1. Purchase or prepare cabbage seedlings for planting
Fortified plants that can withstand frost can be planted early like other cold-weather plants, and the time of year to plant the seedlings depends on where you live. Those planted in spring should be ready before the summer heat, and can be planted 4 weeks before the last frost. Autumn cabbage should be planted 6 to 8 weeks before the first frost. Try to plant the seedlings on a cloudy day or late evening to reduce transplant shock.
Step 2. Mix nitrogen fertilizer and compost into the soil with a pitchfork
Cabbage needs three essential elements in the soil for its growth: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. For optimal development and to prevent some diseases, the pH of the soil should be between 6, 5 and 6, 8.
Step 3. Put on gardening gloves and space the seedlings 30.5 to 61cm apart according to the variety and size you want the plant to reach
The closer the rows are, the less large the cabbages will grow. Better to grow cabbage in full sun, although it also tolerates half shade. Plant so that the first set of leaves are close to the ground.
Step 4. Water regularly with the watering can or pump, distributing 2.5 to 3.8 cm of water per week (if it is not raining)
In hot weather, plants may need more water. Cover the soil with mulch to prevent weeds from growing. Mulch also keeps the soil cooler.
Step 5. When the heads are compact and the inside is tight, cut the cabbage with a sharp knife
Don't wait for the heads to mature because they will crack. Excessive moisture will also cause them to crack. You can leave the rest of the plant in the ground and later harvest the shoots, which will be 5.1 to 10.2cm in diameter. Cabbage heads can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, covered in a plastic bag.
