The bedroom is perhaps the most important room in the house. It's where you sleep, so it's essential that it be a relaxing environment. It also needs to be organized in a practical way, so that you can move around comfortably throughout the day. It's easy to have a beautiful room without sacrificing your personal style. In this article you will find some tips for organizing furniture in an interesting and functional way.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Arranging the Arrangement of Furniture
Step 1. Examine the layout of the room
Before buying new furniture or trying to fix what you already have, you need to understand how the room is structured. The position of the window and the size of the walls will affect how you arrange the furniture. Here are some factors to consider when evaluating the arrangement:
- Wall measurements. To get to know them specifically, use a tailor's tape measure.
- Arrangement of power sockets and telephone. You'll need them for alarm clocks, lamps, televisions, and other devices.
- Arrangement of the television cable entry. You will have to put the television right in this spot, otherwise you will have to make new holes and move the cables (better have an electrician take care of it).
- Windows. Observe which walls have windows, at what height they are and how many there are in the room.
- Cabinets and other doors. Observe which walls have doors, the arrangement of the cabinet (if it is wall-mounted) and which walls are interrupted by doors and windows.
Step 2. Measure the furniture
Decide which pieces you would like to have in the bedroom. Measure and compare them to the size of the room. Before you start moving heavy furniture, you need to determine if it will fit into the space you have available.
Step 3. Watch out for exits
When planning your bedroom layout, think about the area around the door. You have to make sure it is free of obstacles. Avoid placing furniture in places that will block the exit: you should be able to open the door completely, without hindrance.
Step 4. Make a list of the activities you will do in the bedroom
You will of course sleep in it, but many spend other times of the day in this room as well. Will you watch television or read? Will you get dressed, put on makeup or fix your hair? Is the room for one or two people? Is it yours or is it the guest room? This information will guide you in choosing the furniture you need.
Step 5. Furnish the bedroom with appropriately sized furniture
Think about the general space. Do you live in a small apartment with a tiny one bedroom or do you have a spacious house with large and airy rooms? Large furniture is not practical for small apartments, while desks and small beds are not suitable for a larger space. The furniture must match the size of the room and fit into the space you have.
Step 6. Get inspired by your personal style
Some like a modern and minimalist type of furniture, others a warmer and more welcoming style. Some like bare walls, others prefer to hang a lot of photos and pictures. Remember that the bedroom is a personal space. You have to organize it in a way that makes it functional, but it also has to reflect your personality, your tastes and your needs.
Part 2 of 2: Arranging the Furniture
Step 1. Start in bed
Generally it is the most important piece of the room, so it is essential to arrange it in the right way. It is often placed in the center of the wall facing the entrance, making it the focal point of the room. It is also possible to place it next to the longest wall in the room.
- If you don't have enough space to place it in the center of the wall opposite the entrance, or windows or doors prevent you from doing so, you can arrange the bed off-center, next to one of the walls. You can also place the headboard in a corner, but this can take up a lot of space.
- The bed can also be placed between two windows if you have two on the same wall. You should avoid placing it directly under the window, especially if you leave it open often in the warmer months. This could cause annoying drafts.
- Leave enough space around the bed so that you can lie down and get up easily. If you sleep in it alone, you can put it next to a wall. If you are sharing it with another person, leave enough space on both sides to make it comfortable for both of you.
- Try not to block natural light with the headboard.
Step 2. At this point, consider the dresser
If the wardrobe is built-in, the chest of drawers is the second largest piece of furniture in a bedroom. Arrange it on the opposite side of the bed to create a good balance. If you have a lot of wall space, choose a low, wide chest of drawers.
- If you watch television, you can place it on the dresser. It should be facing the bed if you intend to look at it while you are lying down. Putting it on this piece of furniture saves you buying another piece of furniture. If you don't watch TV, but read a lot on the other hand, then use the chest of drawers as a bookcase.
- If you have limited space, choose a tall, vertical chest of drawers over a wide one. This way it will take up less space longitudinally.
- You could arrange the chest of drawers under a window to optimize space.
- If the closet is large enough (for example it's a walk-in closet), or space is limited in your room, you can install drawers in the closet or arrange a chest of drawers in it.
Step 3. Place bedside tables on either side of the bed
Once you've placed the larger pieces of furniture, you can move on to the smaller ones. Bedside tables are particularly important. You can place alarm clocks, lamps, books, remote controls, cell phones, water glasses and anything else you need while in bed. Each bedside table should be placed next to each side of the bed (or just one, if the bed was adjacent to the wall). It should be of a height suitable for that of the mattress.
There are bedside tables of different shapes, sizes and colors. Consider your needs. Do you prefer shelves, bedside tables with drawers or coffee tables? Choose one that reflects your needs
Step 4. Determine if you have room for other furniture
After placing these items, see if there is any space left for other items. Also think about what you need in the bedroom. Do you need a desk to work? An armchair to read and relax? Complete the decor with furniture suited to your needs.
- Choose a desk and chair. You can buy a desk to place in front of an empty wall or under a window, but always remember to calculate the size before purchasing. Alternatively, you can buy a practical corner desk, which won't get in your way.
- Put a pouf at the foot of the bed to have another place to sit, or choose an armchair to seat the people who will visit you. You can also use it to relax in your free time.
- Put a mirror in the room. It can integrate a dressing table, be placed on the desk or hung on the wall.
- Add a library. If you need space for books, photos, and other items, set up a bookcase in front of an empty wall.
- Create a seating area. If the room is small, you can use a simple stool or bench. If it is large, you can choose an armchair or a sofa.
Step 5. Arrange the lamps in different places in the bedroom
Particularly bright lights are not the most suitable for unplugging, so you may have lamps in the areas you will dedicate to reading, watching television or relaxing. You can install spotlights for the ceiling or wall lamps.
Step 6. Consider multipurpose furniture
If you have a small room, you may want to buy multipurpose furniture to save space. For example, try a structure that has a bed at the top and a desk at the bottom. If you don't have room for a chest of drawers, you can purchase a bed with storage.
Step 7. Create some space around the furniture
The room shouldn't be so full that you can't move around or get out comfortably. Leave at least two feet of distance between the sides of the bed and the wall or other furniture.
