Steps
Step 1. Store the strongest cardboard boxes
For example the Pringles potato chips package, or the milk one. Make sure it is waxed cardboard, otherwise it will absorb the hot wax and risk causing a fire as well as considerable disruption on the work surface.
Step 2. Remove any food residue from the surface of the carton by wiping it with a damp absorbent paper
Step 3. Attach the wick to the bottom of the container by placing it exactly in the center
You can do this by using a small piece of duct tape or some melted wax.
Step 4. Place a pencil or similarly shaped object on the surface of the container
Tie the wick to the object making sure it is perfectly vertical and centered.
Step 5. Pour a small amount of hot wax into the container and wait a few seconds to avoid the risk of leaks
Step 6. Fill the dinner container without reaching the rim
The wax will shrink as it cools, so save a small amount for a final refill.
Step 7. Wait for the wax to cool and harden, it will take several hours or a whole night
Step 8. Let the candle cool
When the wax has hardened, you can break and remove the cardboard container.
Step 9. Finished
Advice
- Alternatively, you can use a muffin pan. When the wax has cooled, turn the mold upside down on the work surface and remove the candles by tapping it gently.
- Experiment with different varieties of molds, such as egg carton, cereal box, tomato cans, etc. Be careful not to use expanded polystyrene packaging. Grease the inside of the cans to easily remove the candles.
- You can also use silicone cupcake molds, they are non-stick and available in different fun shapes.
Warnings
- Paraffin like soy and other wax varieties are highly flammable. Never melt the wax directly on the fire, always use a bain-marie, whatever the variety of wax treated. Prefer pots and pans with handles and always be careful.
- By using crayons to color the candles you risk clogging the wick, so that the candle cannot burn properly and could start a dangerous fire. Search the web, you will find multiple solutions to create, decorate and color your candles in total safety.
- Protect your work surface from any wax leaks and remember that hot wax can cause severe skin burns.
