  • The stove works best when there is no or little wind. If there is wind, it will still work, but try to create a shelter near the stove using something non-flammable. Then, did you notice the holes on one side of the wind shield? Place the stove with the holes on the wind side.
  • Think in advance about the type of food you will cook in your Trangia. On some school, group, mountaineering or military expeditions, you may be given a freeze-dried meal in a sealed foil pouch. On other occasions, you or your group will have to prepare food that is suitable for the situation.

  • You never have to refill, refill the stove when it is on - and since the flame is almost invisible in daylight, this is an easy mistake to make.

    This is extremely important! If you try to do this, you will suddenly find yourself holding a bottle of burning liquid in your hand (which you instinctively throw away from you, probably onto a curtain or onto someone). To reload it safely, you will need to let the stove cool enough to be able to pick it up and place it close to the fuel bottle.

    (if the stove is still hot, in fact, the denatured alcohol will evaporate quickly, creating a cloud of gas that will explode on you when you try to light the stove).

  • While you cook:

    Don't touch the stove - it gets VERY hot! You won't be able to see the flames in daylight but you'll still get burned.

  • The safest way to use it is to pour a lot of fuel inside before you start cooking - if you don't use it all, you can store it in the stove for as long as you need it. Always put out the flame by putting the lid on the stove reverse over the stove for 30 seconds, and then remove it until it has cooled down - if you put the lid on normally on a hot stove, the protective rubber seal will melt and catch fire. (Always make sure the seal comes off the lid when setting up the stove and don't let it fall on the floor in the dark.)

  • Never leave the handle attached to a saucepan when it is on the fire. It will get very hot and burn you.
  • Before starting the fire:

    put the stove UNDER, down from each curtain - the denatured alcohol will flow down rivers if you turn the stove over. Since outdoor surfaces are never quite flat, use any stone nearby to create protection that prevents the stove or pot from falling over.

  • Always keep an eye on the stove when it is on. Do not leave it on longer than necessary and never use a different type of fuel to provide heat - toxic fumes (carbon monoxide) are produced which can enter your tent and suffocate you.
  • Do not light the stove inside tents or enclosed spaces. The carbon monoxide produced by camping stoves is toxic and tents are highly flammable.
