Sweet potatoes are nutritious tubers that you can add to many dishes. They contain many substances that are valuable to the body, including calcium, beta carotene and vitamin C. Before eating them, you can boil them, with or without peel. Once cooked, you can use them in many different dishes.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Peel and Boil Sweet Potatoes
Step 1. Wash the potatoes
You should always wash fresh produce before using them and this also applies to sweet potatoes. Place them under cold water to remove all dirt and dust, making sure the peel is perfectly clean before continuing.
Step 2. Peel the potatoes
You can use a peeler or a knife.
If you can't peel them, scrub them first with a brush; this treatment should make the skin softer, allowing you to remove it more easily
Step 3. Prepare the pot
Find one large enough that you can completely submerge the potatoes in the water. Make sure they all fit into the pot and are not too lumped together, then cover them with the lid.
- Once you have found the right pot, fill it halfway with water.
- Place the sweet potatoes in the pot. Make sure they are completely covered in water. If necessary, add more water.
- Boil the water.
Step 4. Cook the potatoes for 10 minutes, then check them
After putting the sweet potatoes in the pot, cover them and wait 10 minutes. After cooking, remove the lid.
The potatoes should be soft enough that you can easily pierce them with a fork. However, you shouldn't be able to cut them with a knife without encountering any resistance
Step 5. Cook longer if needed
If they haven't softened enough after 10 minutes, leave them in the pot for another 10-15 minutes. You can boil them even more if you want to make them very tender, for example to prepare a puree; then cook them for 25-30 minutes.
Once cooked to the right point, use a colander to drain them and let them cool
Method 2 of 3: Boil the Potatoes before Peeling
Step 1. Wash the potatoes
Put them under cold water. Clean the peel thoroughly, making sure to get rid of all dirt and dust.
Step 2. Put the potatoes in the pot
Choose one that is large enough to fully submerge and that has a lid. Fill the container of your choice with water until the potatoes are completely covered. Put it on the stove, with the lid on.
Step 3. Pierce the potatoes with a knife after letting them boil for 10 minutes
Keep the heat high throughout the cooking time, then lift the lid and take a knife. Use it to pierce all the potatoes.
Step 4. Let the potatoes cook for another 20 minutes
After piercing them, cover the pot again. Continue cooking for another 20 minutes at a high temperature.
When they are tender, you should be able to cut them without resistance. If they are still too hard after twenty minutes, let them cook longer
Step 5. Drain the water
Use a colander to remove the water from the pot. Leave the potatoes in the colander to let them cool. If you need to cool them faster, you can put them under cold water.
Step 6. Remove the peel
After boiling a potato, it is much easier to remove the peel. Use a knife to make the first incision; at that point you can peel it as if it were a banana.
Method 3 of 3: Using Sweet Potatoes
Step 1. Cut the potatoes into cubes and serve them as a side dish
You can serve them on their own after boiling them. Just cut them into cubes, then season them with butter, salt and pepper until you get the desired flavor.
Step 2. Add boiled sweet potatoes to other dishes
You can cut them into cubes and use them in a variety of recipes, such as salads, tacos, soups, stews, pasta, and baked dishes. If you want to add nutrients to a dish, you can use these tubers.
Step 3. Make a mashed sweet potato
For this recipe, it's best to peel the potatoes before cooking them. Boil about six potatoes, then put them in an electric mixer and add the other ingredients.
- While blending the potatoes, add 200ml of milk, 100ml at a time.
- You could also add 100g of butter and 200ml of maple syrup.
