Growing garlic is a good project, both for a beginner and for an experienced gardener. Burying a whole garlic bulb gives birth to an entire plant. You can plant different types of garlic, such as Caraglio garlic, Piacenza white, Nubia red, and Vessalico garlic. You can plant it indoors and in containers, where it can be grown in almost any season. Growing it indoors also reduces the risk of disease and insect infestations. To grow healthy and tasty, garlic requires specific care and the right materials. This article tells you how to grow it indoors in a pot.
Steps
Step 1. Choose a pot that is at least 20 cm deep and with holes for drainage
If you want to plant more than 1 bulb, the container must be large enough to accommodate them 10 cm away from each other and 10 cm from the outer sides.
Step 2. Put on your gardening gloves
Step 3. Mix the soil with the garden sand
The soil should be 3 to 1 with sand.
Step 4. Fill the container with the soil you prepared, leaving 2.5 cm of space from the top edge
Step 5. Get regular garlic bulbs
Place them with the flat end facing down, and the pointed end facing up.
Step 6. Push the bulb 10-15cm deep into the soil
The upper end should remain buried for 2.5 cm.
Step 7. Place the bulbs at a distance of 10 cm from each other
Step 8. Position the pot so that it receives approximately 8 hours of direct sunlight each day
A great place to put it is the kitchen window sill.
Step 9. Put the container with the garlic in a sink, bathtub or other place that allows the water to drain
Water the soil by spraying it evenly and let the water drain through the holes in the bottom of the pot.
Step 10. Water often enough to keep the soil moist, but not too wet
This will depend a lot on the sunlight and warmth of your home. The warmer the house, the more often you will have to wet.
Step 11. Check the garlic when it begins to sprout with green leaves similar to chives
Step 12. Cut off the flowers when they start to appear
In this way, all the energy of the plant is concentrated in the growth of the bulb and makes it grow larger.
Step 13. Harvest the garlic 8-10 months later, when the leaves begin to dry out and turn brown
Step 14. Hang the harvested garlic in a cool, dry place, such as a garage
It should dry in about a week.
Step 15. Eat or cook your own dried garlic
Advice
- It is recommended to get the bulbs in a garden shop, since those found in supermarkets are chemically treated to prevent germination and do not grow well.
- If the container is large and you want to put more than 1 row of garlic, make sure the bulbs are planted at least 18 inches apart.
Warnings
- Growing garlic indoors can release strong odors that can overwhelm other scents in your home.
- Do not hesitate to collect the garlic when the leaves die and begin to fall. The wedges may become malformed.
