With the right tools, chopping ice is child's play. If the thirst bites are making you crave a mojito, fear not, the technique for making crushed ice is outlined in this article.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Wooden Mallet
Step 1. Shake or fold the ice tray taking care to remove all cubes
Store all cubes in a sealable food bag.
Step 2. Use a small wooden mallet to break and crush the ice, being very careful not to tear the bag
If you don't have a wooden mallet, you can use a sufficiently heavy kitchen utensil such as a pestle or rolling pin.
Break the ice with the right slowness and patience. Place the sealed bag on a wooden kitchen cutting board and meticulously chop the ice. Don't get caught up in the heat, especially if what you're brewing isn't your first drink
Step 3. Enjoy your crushed ice to chill your favorite drink
Method 2 of 3: Lewis Bag
Step 1. Shake or fold the ice tray taking care to remove all cubes
Transfer the ice to your Lewis bag. A Lewis bag is a bag originally designed to hold coins but has become famous as a container in which to break and crush ice. If you don't own a Lewis bag (they are pretty cheap), you can replace it with a clean pillowcase.
The Lewis bag is perfect for large quantities of ice. While a sealable bag will allow you to crush enough ice for the preparation of a cocktail or two. On the other hand, a Lewis bag is ideal for creating 5 or more drinks at the same time
Step 2. Break the ice using a baseball bat or small wooden mallet
As before, move methodically and patiently. The Lewis bag will be able to absorb most of the released moisture and your ice will be perfectly dry and ideal for a cocktail.
Step 3. Enjoy your crushed ice to chill your favorite drink
Method 3 of 3: Blender or Food Processor
Step 1. Shake or fold the ice tray taking care to remove all cubes
Transfer them to a blender or food processor. If you want to mechanize your ice breaking process this is the method for you. But make sure that your chosen kitchen utensil has enough power to chop hard ice cubes.
Step 2. Turn on the blender at short regular intervals until the ice is completely crushed
Short starts of about 3 seconds each should give the required result.
