For many Westerners, the use of the squat toilet may be new. The unusual shape, style and method of using it are completely unknown details for those who do not live in the countries where this type of toilet is mainly used. Before being forced to use a squat toilet, it is worth learning how it works, in order to avoid problems and inconveniences.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Getting into Position
Step 1. Decide what to do with the pants
Before bending over, squatting, and using the bathroom, you need to consider how to handle clothing. Just like in Western toilets, you have to take off your clothes to perform your duties. However, it is difficult for beginners to use a squat toilet without taking off their clothing.
- If this is your first time using this type of toilet, then you should take your pants off completely along with your underwear.
- If, on the other hand, you are comfortable with the squatting position, you can limit yourself to lowering them to the ankles.
Step 2. Stand on top of the squat toilet
Once you've taken care of your clothes and are feeling comfortable, you need to find the right position. Stand on top of the toilet with each foot on each side. This way you will be perfectly aligned with the toilet when you squat.
- If there is some sort of partial toilet cover, face that side.
- Try to stay as close to the cover as possible.
- Avoid bending over directly over the hole or you will get wet with splashes of water.
Step 3. Squat down
After lining up over the toilet, you can lower yourself down. Bend your knees and gently come down to a squatting position. Your knees should be pointing up and your butt should be right above the toilet.
- Get down completely, your butt should be at ankle height, next to the toilet.
- If it's an awkward position for you, try hugging your knees.
Part 2 of 2: Using the Squat toilet
Step 1. Carry out your needs
Once crouched, you just have to relax and let nature take its course. While this step is not that different from using a western toilet, be aware that the squatting position has proven to be much more efficient during evacuation. So relax and do what you need to do.
Step 2. Clean
When you're done, it's time to get clean. In many countries where the Turkish toilet is widespread, toilet paper is not used, but a spray bottle or a bowl of water and your hand. Look around to see which option is available.
- Most water bowls also come with a ladle that you can use to spray your private parts with water and then clean yourself with your hand.
- The sprayer has the same function as the ladle and the bowl of water. Use it as a hand shower to get wet and wipe with the other hand.
- You can bring some toilet paper. However, many toilets do not have a drain that can dispose of it properly and you could clog it.
Step 3. Properly dispose of toilet paper
If you have decided to use it to clean yourself, then you need to throw it away in the right way. Not all pipes are large enough for paper to pass through and you risk damaging them by throwing them there. Always eliminate the paper in the most appropriate way, when using a squat toilet.
If there is a trash can nearby, chances are it is just for toilet paper
Step 4. Flush the toilet
Some squat toilets have a handle that you have to turn just like western toilets. However, others do not have this device, but it is your responsibility to clean after using the bathroom. Always leave the toilet clean for the person who will come after you.
- Use a bucket of water, if one is provided, and make sure all waste is disposed of down the drain.
- There may also be a foot pedal to flush the toilet.
- If there is a toothbrush, use it to remove the shoe prints you left at the edge of the toilet.
Advice
- When traveling, always carry toilet paper with you. Not all public toilets have it and in some cases you have to pay for it.
- Before throwing toilet paper down the drain, check for a litter bin. Some plumbing systems are unable to handle the disposal of paper and in that case you will have to throw it in the trash.
- When you squat, hug your knees for more stability.
- Try to squat as close to the toilet cover as possible so you are sure you are in the right position.
- Pour some water into the toilet before using it, to facilitate subsequent cleaning.
