Internal telephone numbers allow large companies to connect users who call with dozens of different offices and employees. There are several shortcuts you can use to save time when you need to contact a specific office. Thanks to modern operating systems, it is also possible to program a smartphone to automatically call the internal number.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Calling an Extension Number on Touch Tone (DTMF) Phones
Step 1. Call the company number
If you use a landline phone, use the area code 1-800 to avoid being charged for a long distance. On mobile, numbers 1-800 and other area codes will be deducted from your available minutes.
Step 2. Listen to the various options
Most of the internal numbers of large companies have an automatic system that lists a number of options for reaching the office or department of your choice. If you already have the extension number, you won't have to listen to the options every time.
Step 3. Wait for you to be asked to enter the extension number
In some cases, however, you may be asked to enter a number from 1 to 9, to select the required service.
Step 4. Use the numeric keypad to enter the extension number (3 to 5 digits)
Wait for someone to answer the call.
Step 5. Try to automatically call the extension number
If the company has 4-digit internal numbers, there is probably the possibility of replacing the last 4 digits of the company number to call the internal number of your choice.
For example, if the company number is 1-800-222-333 and the extension number is 1234, try calling 1-800-222-1234 to bypass the automated system
Method 2 of 2: Automatically Call Internal Numbers on Smartphone
Step 1. Call the company number and find out how long it takes before you are asked to enter the extension number
- Try entering the internal number at the beginning of the call. If this works, you will need to use a pause option or a comma when entering the number.
- If, on the other hand, you must necessarily listen to the entire recorded message before calling the internal number, you will have to use the wait option, or a semicolon, when entering the internal number.
- Both Android and Apple phones use these conventions.
Step 2. Go to the phone book
Step 3. Click on the "+" sign to add a new contact, or select a phone number already in the phonebook to which you want to add the internal number
Tap the contact and select "Edit".
Step 4. Tap on the area next to the telephone number section
Depending on your phone, you may need to press the + sign to add a new number.
Step 5. Type the number in the appropriate field
If the main number is already entered, be sure to place the cursor at the end of the original 10-digit number.
Step 6. Press the “+ * #” key at the bottom of the numeric keypad if you are using iPhone
If you are using Android, skip to the next step.
Step 7. Choose the pause method if you have the possibility to call the extension number directly
If you are using Android, type a comma and then type the extension number.
The smartphone, after calling the number, will pause a little and then enter the internal number
Step 8. Choose the “wait” method instead if you have to wait for the recorded voice to finish speaking before entering the extension number
On iPhone, press the "wait" button to insert a semicolon and then enter the extension number. On Android, enter a semicolon using the keyboard and then enter the extension number.
