This wikiHow teaches you how to add a movie to an iMovie project or media library on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: On a Mac
Step 1. Open iMovie
The icon depicts a purple star containing a white video camera.
Step 2. Click on the Media Files tab
It is located at the top of the window.
Step 3. Click on File in the menu bar at the top of the screen
Step 4. Click Import Media Files…
Step 5. Click on the Import to drop-down menu:
at the top of the window.
Step 6. Click on the destination of the new video
You can save it directly into a project or add it to the iMovie media library for later use.
Step 7. Select the location of the video
Use the menu located on the left side of the window to select the folder or location where you saved the video.
Click on a camera in the "Cameras" section to shoot a new video
Step 8. Click on the video you want to add
Once you have selected the folder or location where you have saved it, it will appear on the right side of the window.
- Hold down the ⌘ key while clicking to select multiple videos.
- Alternatively, click on "Import All" at the bottom right to import all media files from the selected folder or location.
Step 9. Click Import Selected at the bottom right
The selected video will be imported to the specified destination on iMovie.
To add the video to another project, double click on a project in the same tab, then click on "My media" in the upper left and drag the new video to the project timeline
Method 2 of 2: On an iPhone / iPad
Step 1. Open the iMovie application

Step 2. Tap the Projects tab
It is located at the top of the screen.
Should iMovie open a video or other tab, tap the "Back" link in the top left until you see three tabs at the top of the screen: "Videos", "Projects" and "Cinema"
Step 3. Tap a project to open it
Alternatively, tap ➕ to start a new project. You will be prompted to select a video from the photo gallery
Step 4. Tap the circular Edit button
It is located almost at the bottom of the screen.
Step 5. Select where to insert the video
To do this, scroll through the project timeline at the bottom of the screen.
Step 6. Tap +
It is located on the left side of the screen, below or next to the video project preview.
Step 7. Tap Video towards the top of the screen
Step 8. Tap the location of the video
Use the menu to select the album, application or place where you saved the video.
Step 9. Tap a video
This will highlight it and open a dialog box below.
Step 10. Tap ⊕ in the box below the video
The selected movie will be added to the iMovie project in the specified location.
