How to Use Tumblr (with Pictures)

This article explains how to use the Tumblr platform on a computer or mobile device. Tumblr is a social network whose purpose is to encourage users to give free rein to their creativity by publishing textual posts or images that can give added value to the community and to all those who will view its contents.

Steps

Part 1 of 4: Creating an Account

Step 1. Log in to the Tumblr website

Paste the URL https://www.tumblr.com/ into the address bar of your computer's internet browser to access the official Tumblr website.

• If you're using a mobile device, tap the Tumblr app icon with the white "t" on a dark blue background.
• If you haven't downloaded the Tumblr app on your mobile device yet, you can do it now on both iOS and Android platforms.

Step 2. Press the Get Started button

It is blue in color and is placed in the center of the page that has appeared.

Step 3. Enter your account information

You will need to fill in the following fields:

• Email: Enter your preferred email address. Next you will need to verify the correctness of the email address you provided, so make sure it is active and that you can have access to it.
• Password: Type the account security password.

• Username: Enter the username you want to use for the Tumblr profile. This is the name other people will see when they view your account.

  • If you're on a computer, Tumblr will automatically generate a list of usernames for you to choose from.
  • You may need to enter several usernames before you find one that hasn't already been chosen by other people.

  

  Step 4. Press the Login button

  It is located at the bottom of the page.

  If you are using the mobile app, tap the button Come on located in the upper right corner of the screen.

  

  Step 5. Provide your age

  Type inside the text field displayed in the center of the page.

  

  Step 6. Select the checkbox "I have read

  .. box.

  This way you confirm that you have read and accepted the conditions and terms for using Tumblr's services.

  If you are using the mobile app, skip this step

  

  Step 7. Press the Next button

  It is blue in color and is located below the "I've read …" checkbox.

  If you are using the mobile app, tap the button Come on located in the upper right corner of the screen.

  

  Step 8. Complete the verification process to ensure that you are a real person and not a bot

  Select the "I'm not a robot" checkbox, then follow the on-screen instructions. You will probably need to select a series of images in which specific objects are displayed (e.g. cars, traffic lights, bicycles, etc.). After completing this step you will automatically be taken to the next one.

  If you are using a mobile device you can skip this step

  

  Step 9. Select your interests

  Choose 5 categories of content you like to show on your Tumblr page, then click or press the button Come on located in the upper right corner of the page or screen.

  

  Step 10. Verify your email address

  The last step in completing the process of creating your Tumblr account is to verify the email address you provided. Follow these instructions:

  • Access the mailbox linked to the address you used to create the Tumblr account.
  • Select the "Verify Your Email Address" email you received from Tumblr.

  • Push the button It's me!

    placed in the center of the message.

  • Select the check button "I'm not a robot", complete the procedure again to verify that you are a user and not a bot, press the button Verify Email, then click the link go to the dashboard (only if you are using a computer).

  Part 2 of 4: Interacting with Posts

  

  Step 1. Review your dashboard

  You can return to the Tumblr dashboard at any time by selecting the "Dashboard" button, featuring a stylized house icon visible at the top right of the site page (or at the bottom of the screen if you are using a mobile device). The dashboard displays posts and content from all blogs you're following, including yours.

  

  Step 2. Find a post you want to interact with

  Scroll through the list of content displayed on the dashboard until you find the post you want to "Like", repost or comment on.

  

  Step 3. Like a post

  If the content of a post has impressed you positively, click or tap the heart-shaped icon in the lower right corner of the box to add a "Like". The post in question will also be automatically inserted in the "Liked posts" section of your profile, so that you can view it again at a later time.

  

  Step 4. Republish a post

  In jargon this action is called "reblog" and allows you to publish another user's post directly to your Tumblr blog. Click or tap the rectangular icon with two arrows in the lower right corner of the post box (to the left of the "Like" icon), then click the button Reblog (on computer) or Publish (on mobile devices).

  • If you wish, you can add a comment to the original post before publishing it. Click or tap the text field below the original post, then type the comment you want to post.

  • You also have the option of scheduling the automatic republishing of a post by following these instructions: click the icon

    

    next to the button Reblog (or tap the icon ⚙️ located in the upper right corner of the screen), choose the option Program, type or select the date and time you want the post to be published and press the button Program.

  • To add another user's post to your queue, click the icon

    

    next to the button Reblog (or tap the icon ⚙️ located in the upper right corner of the screen), choose the item Add to queue and press the button In line.

  

  Step 5. Send a post as a direct message

  If you wish, you can forward a post to another person as a message. Click the "Share" icon in the shape of a paper airplane in the lower right part of the post in question, type the username of the person you want to send it to using the "Message for …" text field, then press the button in the shape of airplane.

  As with a post you want to repost on your blog, even when you submit a post you can add a comment before posting the message using the "You can say something, if you want …" text field at the bottom of the window

  

  Step 6. Follow the author of a post

  Select the profile picture of the person who posted the post, then choose the option follow to add it to your account's "Following" list. Content posted to Tumblr by the people you follow will automatically appear on your dashboard.

  If you want to follow a specific person, perform a search using the "Search Tumblr" text field at the top of the dashboard (or by tapping the magnifying glass icon if you are using a mobile device), then type the corresponding name, select it from the list of results that will appear and press the button follow.

  Part 3 of 4: Viewing Your Content

  

  Step 1. Access the profile menu

  Click or tap the human silhouette icon at the top right of the page (on a computer) or in the lower right corner of the screen (on a mobile device). If you are using a computer, a drop-down menu will appear.

  On a mobile device you will be automatically redirected to the "Posts" section of the account

  

  Step 2. Select the Liked Posts option

  It is visible at the top of the drop-down menu that appeared (on a computer) or under your blog name (on a mobile device).

  

  Step 3. Review the posts you liked

  All the posts you have "liked" will be listed within the section under consideration.

  You can remove a post from the "Liked Posts" list by clicking or tapping its heart icon

  

  Step 4. View the list of people you are following on Tumblr

  Access your profile menu again, then select the option I'm following. A full list of all the people you are following will be displayed.

  • On mobile devices, simply tap on your voice I'm following located on the right of the card Liked posts.
  • You can choose to unfollow a user by pressing the button Don't follow located on the right of the profile name (on a computer) or by touching the profile of the person in question, selecting the icon in the shape of a stylized human silhouette and choosing the option Don't follow from the menu that will appear.

  

  Step 5. Go to the "Posts" section of your profile

  Open the "Account" menu, then click your username from the drop-down menu that will appear.

  On mobile, tap the item Post located on the left side of the screen.

  

  Step 6. Check your content

  Inside the section that appeared, all the posts you created and published on Tumblr are listed. If you have not yet started publishing content on the platform, the section in question will be empty.

  Part 4 of 4: Creating a Post

  

  Step 1. Make sure you are on the "Posts" page

  From this section of the Tumblr profile you can create a new post, but you can also do it directly from the dashboard.

  Other Tumblr pages also allow you to create new posts, as you can do by selecting the pencil icon "Create a post" in the upper right corner of the page (on a computer) or in the lower central part of the screen (on a mobile device)

  

  Step 2. Select the type of post you want to create

  If you are using a computer you will notice the presence of different colored icons placed at the top of the page. If you are using a mobile device you will first need to tap the "Create a post" icon featuring a pencil at the bottom of the page. Below is the list of post types you can create on Tumblr:

  • Text: A text-only post will be created.
  • Photo: In this type of post you will be able to insert an image and also some text.
  • Quote: to create a post that will be formatted as a quote.
  • Link: A post will be created in the form of a hyperlink (for example "www.google.com") which will redirect the user to another website.
  • Chat: A post formatted as a conversation between two or more people will be created.
  • Audio: allows you to publish an audio track (for example a piece of music or a podcast).
  • Video: allows you to post a video.

  

  Step 3. Create a post

  Depending on the type of content you want to publish, the procedure to follow to create the post will be different:

  • Text: Give the post a title using the "Title" field, then type the post text in the "Your text here" box.
  • Photo: select the option to be able to upload an image, choose the photo to publish and add the caption (optional). If you are using a mobile device you will need to authorize the Tumblr app to access the device's camera and images stored in the internal memory;
  • Citation: enter the citation to be published in the "Citation" field, then type the source of the citation in the "Source" field.
  • Link: Type the link title (mobile only), enter the URL, and add a caption (optional and available on mobile only).
  • Chat: Type the name of a chat participant followed by a colon (for example "Mom:"), enter the conversation text, create a new line and enter the names of the other participants and the text of their conversation.
  • Audio: enter the name of the song or audio track you want to publish, select it from the list that appears and add a caption (optional).
  • Video: select the option to upload a video file you want to use, choose the video to publish, activate the "This is my original work" slider (on computer only) and add a description (optional).
  Come on, add the text and press the button come on, at this point tap the button again Come on.

  

  Step 4. Publish your content

  Click or tap the "Post" button visible in the lower right of the post box or in the upper right corner of the device screen to publish the post on your blog. The content you have created will be displayed on your dashboard and on that of all the people who follow you.

  

  Step 5. Save a post as a draft

  Tumblr gives you the option to save the post during the creation phase so that you can finish and publish it later. Saved posts are stored in the "Drafts" section of the profile. To save a post, follow these instructions:

  • Desktop and Laptop: Click the icon

    

    located on the right of the button Mail, click on Save as draft, then click the button Save draft located in the lower right of the post pane. All saved posts are grouped within the section Drafts of the "Post" page.

  • Mobile device: Tap the gear icon in the upper right corner of the post, select the item Save as draft from the drop-down menu that appeared and press the button Save draft located in the upper right corner of the screen. To access your saved drafts from your mobile device, tap the gear icon visible in the upper right corner of the "Posts" page, then choose the option Drafts.

  

  Step 6. Schedule automatic posting

  This feature allows you to post content on the blog without having to log into the Tumblr dashboard. Follow these instructions:

  • Desktop and Laptop: Click the icon

    

    located on the right of the button Mail, click the option Program, enter the date and time of publication and click the button Program.

  • Mobile device: Tap the gear icon at the top of the post box, choose the option Program, select the time of publication and press the button Program.

  

  Step 7. Review your posts

  Return to the "Posts" section of Tumblr to see the complete list of all the posts you have created.

  To delete a post, select the gear (or trash can) icon under the item you want to delete, then choose the option Delete when required.

  Advice

  • After setting up your Tumblr account, you can customize it by changing the theme or adding a new page, in order to make the blog look even more yours.
  • Add as many tags as needed to emphasize your posts, so people who don't follow you directly can still see the content you post.
