Having trouble seeing well in dark streets with your car headlights? The yellowed patina you notice on the surface is oxidation of the plastic or polycarbonate. Keep reading this article to learn about two different methods of restoring old headlights to their original condition.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Using a Commercial Product
Step 1. Go to the auto parts store and choose a commercial product to restore the plastic of the headlights
Step 2. Start by washing and drying the outer surface
Work in a shady area.
Step 3. Apply a small amount of product with a cotton cloth and rub the lens area in circular motions
- The product should dry as you work;
- Repeat the process on the same spot and as the product dries, use a clean area of the rag to polish the surface and remove any residue.
Step 4. Once satisfied with the result, continue treating the rest of the light the same way, focusing on one small area at a time
Step 5. If you are not satisfied, you can try the method described below
Method 2 of 2: Sand and Apply Clear Spray Paint
Step 1. Gather all the material
For this project you need water-based sandpaper (800 and 1500 grit), a spray bottle filled with clean water, dry cotton cloths, and a can of spray paint that offers UV protection.
Step 2. Wash the lights
Once clean, moisten the 800 grit sandpaper with the spray bottle and slowly sand the plastic in light, gentle circular motions. Constantly wet the emery paper and spray the lenses of the lights to remove residue.
Step 3. Repeat the process on the same lens using 1500 grit paper
Wash the plastic surface and wait for it to dry. It should look a lot worse than before. When it is perfectly dry, apply a light, even layer of clear varnish according to the instructions on the can. Remember to protect the bodywork and any areas that could inadvertently become coated with the spray paint. Once the product is dry, you can compare the much lighter headlight with the one you still need to treat. Everyone recommends repeating the work on the other lens, but this is your chance to decide whether to restore the second lens as well or consider replacing the headlights completely; What's more, you can also show off your work and skills to family and friends, showing them the difference.
Advice
- Wear a protective mask when using spray paint.
- Do not perform this job on a windy day or in direct sunlight.
- Wait for the clear coat to dry overnight before driving in the rain or washing your car thoroughly.
- Cover every surface around your work area to prevent it from being exposed to spray paint.
