With the right costume, it will be difficult not to feel like a real man (or woman) of steel. To create a realistic Superman costume at home, you will need red fabric, a blue suit and some felt. Don't forget to add a hedgehog in the middle of your forehead before you leave the house to save the world!
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Making the Costume
Step 1. Go online and buy a blue lycra onesie
Choose one with long sleeves and long pants. Alternatively, you can get yourself a t-shirt and a pair of elastane pants.
A store that sells dance gear might order you a blue onesie if it's not available
Step 2. Look for a plain track suit at a thrift store or supermarket
Buy at least one size smaller than yours to make it snug. Avoid jumpsuits with stripes on the sides.
Step 3. Look for blue leggings and a long-sleeved shirt of approximately the same color
Men can wear the extra large size of women's leggings to get an authentic look.
Step 4. Search for "Superman" with Google images
The search results will show you several photos of the superhero symbol. Print it.
Step 5. Zoom in on the symbol so that it covers the chest
Any copy shop will be able to explain how to enlarge the image.
Step 6. Make three different shapes of the large "S" symbol
Cut the edge of the diamond, the "S" shape and the yellow diamond which is slightly smaller than the red one.
Set aside some yellow felt that you will need for the belt
Step 7. Outline each shape with a piece of felt
Use a washable fabric pen or chalk to outline three distinct shapes. Cut a red diamond, a smaller yellow diamond and a red "S" from the three pieces of felt.
Step 8. Layer by placing the yellow diamond on top of the red one
Attach it with super glue.
Step 9. Attach the "S" with glue to the yellow diamond
Let the three layers dry.
Step 10. Outline the "S" and the diamond with a black permanent marker, just as shown in the original image
Step 11. Try on the blue onesie
Adjust the crest and sew it by hand, or with the sewing machine, to the chest of the onesie.
Part 2 of 4: Add the Cloak
Step 1. Purchase about three feet of shiny red synthetic fabric
If you can't find lycra, use felt as well. It is advisable to choose a type of fabric that does not fray and creates a straight line without edges.
Step 2. Set aside a yard of fabric for briefs
Use the other two meters to make the cape.
Step 3. Measure a red lycra rectangle that reaches the top of your calves
Cut it to the right height with fabric scissors.
Step 4. Put the top of the rectangle around your neck
Tuck it in on the sides and back of the shirt collar. Use a pin to secure it.
Step 5. Sew the cape into the back and collar side of the blue jumper / onesie with a sewing machine or by hand
You will need to secure the material in several places so that you have enough fabric to float behind you.
For a complete look, sew hems on the sides and bottom of the cape with a 0.6cm hem using your sewing machine
Part 3 of 4: Making Briefs
Step 1. Get a pair of white men's briefs
They should be high-waisted.
Step 2. Place the rest of the red fabric thread on the work table
Trace around the briefs with a chalk.
Step 3. Turn them where the horse meets the fabric, as if you were making a reflection
Draw another outline on the other side that joins the horse.
Step 4. Cut the briefs
Fold them in half at the height of the crotch. Pin the sides together, leaving holes open for the legs and the top of the briefs.
Step 5. Sew the sides together
Try on the briefs over the onesie pants.
Step 6. Cut two vertical lines about 5cm long and 5cm apart just above the right hip; cut two more lines under the left hip
Repeat on the back and sides. These will be the loops of your belt.
Step 7. Cut a piece of yellow felt slightly larger than your waist circumference
It should be about 5cm thick.
Step 8. Sew it through the belt loops
Secure it with a gold buckle when you try on your costume. Leave it loose until you are ready to try on the swimsuit because it will not be as stretchy as the red briefs.
Part 4 of 4: Coloring the Boots
Step 1. Go shopping in thrift stores
Look for cowboy boots, riding boots, or rubber boots. Look for boots that reach mid-calf, just like Superman's red ones.
Step 2. Purchase some bright red spray paint
Choose a glossy paint for an even more striking effect. For a stronger coverage, also buy the primer.
Step 3. Spray the outside of the boots with primer
Wait for it to dry and apply a coat of red spray paint.
