Not sure how to fix a leak between the shower head and the shower hose? This article will help you.
Steps
Step 1. Unscrew the shower head
Use a key if necessary.
Step 2. Remove the gasket inside the shower head to inspect it
If the gasket leaves black residue on your fingers, then you will need to replace it.
Step 3. Replace it by buying a gasket of the correct size, comparing the new with the old
Step 4. Place the O-ring into the shower head
It won't take a lot of strength to do it. Make sure the gasket sits evenly.
Step 5. Use Teflon on the thread of the hose and not the shower head
Do this following the direction of the thread by covering it completely without also covering the pipe. Use two pieces of tape, making them adhere well. You should be able to see the crest of the thread but it must be covered by the tape.
Step 6. Tear off the tape to separate it from the roll
Step 7. Screw on the shower head by squeezing it with your hands
Step 8. Test if you have repaired the leak by turning on the water
If there are no leaks, you are done!
Step 9. If there are still any, unscrew and screw the shower head again
Step 10. Try again
Step 11. If the leak is less, use a wrench to screw the shower head half a turn again
Do not screw too hard, you may strip the thread.
Step 12. Try it
Step 13. If the leak is still present and substantial, repeat the steps disassembling everything and re-applying Teflon, adding an extra piece
If the pipe is very old, the thread may be worn out so use a few extra pieces of Teflon.
Advice
- Make sure you are using Teflon tape and not other piping tapes. Real Teflon tape works much better and is worth buying even if a little more expensive.
- If you don't want to replace the shower head, look for a product to fix the leaks. The fastest solution is to use a quick-acting resin, it repairs leaks in 30 seconds.
- If the shower head doesn't unscrew easily, apply lithium grease to the joint and let it sit for at least an hour. Don't strain the shower head! You could strip the thread, break the shower head, or (worst of all) break the hose.
- Another option, if the shower head does not unscrew easily, is to replace the entire arm. Normally, you can find 15cm shower arms in furniture or parts stores. Follow the instructions on the package to disassemble the old shower arm and mount the new one. Be sure to use tape or piping lubricant in the joints. After that, connect the new shower head to the arm. Be sure to check for leaks.
Warnings
- This article discusses a problem with the shower head and not, for example, the lever on the shower head not sealing completely.
- It is important not to tighten the joints too much, because you risk stripping the threads and breaking some components.
- At first, do not use more than 2 pieces of Teflon. By putting on too much tape, you will reduce adhesion and may even completely wet the ceiling when you turn on the water to test!
