The following instructions provide you with a practical remedy for cigarette burns on carpet. It's easy: just replace the fibers and in some cases, remove the burns around the offending area.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Repair Small Cigarette Burns
Step 1. Trim the scorched edges with the manicure scissors
Step 2. Use tweezers to remove the fibers around the burn
Step 3. With scissors, cut a piece of healthy carpet from a hidden area
Step 4. Arrange the clean fibers on a saucer
You'll need enough to cover the hole.
Step 5. Apply strong glue to the damaged area from which you removed the burnt fibers
Step 6. Use tweezers to compact the new fibers onto the glue
Step 7. Cover the repaired area with a heavy object such as a tome for a few days
Step 8. Comb the new fibers with a wide-toothed comb or move them with your fingers to match the rest of the carpet
Method 2 of 2: Repair Large Burns
Burns that are too large to fill with fibers can be repaired by using a piece of carpet. You can do this if you have a remnant left or if you have a hidden area that you can safely cut.
Step 1. Prepare the burned area by cutting away the damaged fibers with a sharp knife or razor blade
Step 2. Aspire to make sure you have removed everything
Step 3. Measure the burned area
-
If you have managed to cut a single piece, you can use it as a template.
-
If you have not been able to cut out the damaged section in one piece, cut out the size of the area plus 2.54 cm on all sides from a sheet.
Step 4. Place the paper on the piece of carpet you will use to replace the removed one
Step 5. Outline the shape on the carpet with a washable marker
Step 6. Use a sharp knife or razor blade to cut the replacement carpet
Step 7. Apply upholstery putty to the damaged area, following the manufacturer's directions
Step 8. Arrange the new carpet
Step 9. Cover with a towel
Step 10. Place a heavy object on the repaired area and leave it there for several days
Step 11. Gently loosen the fibers around the seams with a wide-toothed comb or your fingers so that the new carpet becomes even with the other
Advice
- The higher the pile of the carpet, the easier it will be to hide the new seams once the repair is complete.
- Depending on the size and location of the burn and your furniture, consider using a small piece of cloth to cover the burn spot.
Warnings
- Carpet fibers and segments in hidden or nearby areas may not be the same color when you try to fix them. The sun and excessive use can discolor carpet, so watch out for variations before taking replacement fibers.
- For areas larger than 5cm, you should seek professional help.
