An inadequately insulated house causes a great deal of heat loss. Instead of turning up the thermostat, try to insulate your home for good! This article will tell you how to go about it, helping you save some money on bills and reduce carbon emissions into the environment.
Steps
Step 1. Insulate the doors well to prevent heat loss
Place draft excluders on entry doors and also on other interior doors in the house if necessary. The sealant - an inexpensive product available in all DIY stores - is very easy to use and should be applied like duct tape. You can also apply it with a brush to seal the mailbox, the bottom of the doors, and to repair some holes or cracks.
Step 2. Make sure the windows are well insulated
Cracks or gaps in windows are the primary cause of heat loss in the home. To check that there are no weak points, pass the palm of your hand near the edges of the window: if you feel drafts of cold air it means that in that point the structure is deformed or damaged. Try to fix that part with sealant or putty.
To make things easier for you, buy some sealant in a tube and with a small pointed applicator. Just press the tube and lightly spread the product to complete the job in a few minutes
Step 3. Consider installing double glazing
If you don't have double glazing, it might be worth making a small investment. This tool will allow you to save a lot of money on heating bills.
Step 4. Use curtains and blinds
Closing balconies, shutters and curtains at night helps to keep some heat inside the house and reduce dispersion. Plus, curtains help make your home feel warmer and cozier! To optimize your resources even more and retain more heat, you could buy thermal curtains.
Step 5. Fill in the holes and crevices in the floor
Most homes have gaps in the floor and baseboards and it is therefore possible that your home has this problem as well. To fix it, you just need to have some silicone sealant. If you have a wooden floor it would be better to rely on professionals to fix the critical points. To solve the problem faster, just buy a carpet and spread it over the cracks.
Step 6. Insulate your penthouse
Insulating your home well can allow you to significantly reduce your carbon footprint per year and save on utility bills. This option is one of the cheapest and easiest to make - even an inexperienced person could try it! Just buy some glass wool and cover all sides of your attic. Glass wool with a thickness of 15 cm costs about 5 euros per square meter. It is composed of a mixture of natural sand and recycled glass melted at 1,450 ° C and which is then reduced into fiber. Glass wool is also a completely reclable material.
Step 7. Build a drywall
If you have a little or no insulated concrete wall in your house, you can build a 10-15 cm thick drywall. The procedure is very simple and you can choose to use Ytong sheets [1] or plasterboard panels. The latter are easy to build and you can save even more by inserting very cheap glass wool inside. Glass wool also insulates very well against noise. In addition, both Ytong sheets and plasterboard panels are fire resistant.
Step 8. Wrap the water tank with an 80mm cover
This method will allow you to reduce heat losses by 75% and in a few months you will see a big difference in terms of costs.
