Did working under the car cause a grease stain on your new shirt while you changed the oil? Did you forget your cocoa butter in your trouser pocket and put it in the washing machine? Maybe you got a little carried away by the enthusiasm when you fried the squid? For any grease or grease stain there is almost certainly a way to remove it using one or more of the methods outlined in this article.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Dishwashing Liquid
Step 1. Cover the grease stain completely with some liquid dish soap
Specific degreasing cleaners can help, but they are not necessary.
- If you use a colored detergent, be sure to dilute it or it may stain your dress.
- For stubborn stains, use an old toothbrush. It will help you remove the stain better than with your hands alone.
Step 2. Work the cleaner on the stain
You will see it instantly dissolve. Dishwashing detergents contain special substances that absorb fat. You can use practically any brand, it doesn't matter.
Step 3. Rinse the area with water or vinegar
The latter is a natural cleaner used in several applications. If you want, mix one part of vinegar with two of water and soak the item of clothing in it.
Step 4. Wash the piece by itself with laundry detergent
Carefully follow the washing instructions on the label.
When ready, let the garment air dry. Using an extremely hot mechanical dryer can cause the persistent oil or grease stain to stick to your garment
Step 5. Repeat the instructions if the stain does not come off
Method 2 of 4: Stain Remover and Hot Water
Step 1. Use a stain remover like Shout to clean any oil and / or grease stains
Spray it generously over the area and scrub with a toothbrush.
Step 2. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to a boil
Let the stain remover work while you go through this step.
Step 3. Remove the boiling water from the heat and pour it over the stains from above
A couple of things to remember at this point in the process:
- Place your garment in a tub, sink, or other safe area. To throw boiling water over him, you shouldn't put the item of clothing on the floor, as you risk spilling it on your feet as well.
-
Try to keep the pot of water as high as possible. This method works for two reasons:
- Really boiling water helps break the chemical bonds of the fat and / or oil.
- The harder the water hits the grease / oil stain from above, the more force it generates to hit the garment.
- be careful! You're using scalding water. Be sure to aim well at the dress, avoiding any splashes that may bounce and hit you.
Step 4. Repeat these steps for each fat / oil zone
Turn the garment inside out and attack the stain with another round of stain remover / boiling water if the method didn't work the first time.
Step 5. Wash the garment, alone, with the detergent
Follow the washing instructions on the label exactly.
When ready, let the garment air dry. Using an extremely hot mechanical dryer can cause the persistent oil or grease stain to stick to your garment
Method 3 of 4: Baby powder
Step 1. Wipe off any excess grease or oil with a paper towel
Try to remove as much grease / oil as you can before moving on to the next step.
Step 2. Generously coat the stain in question with talcum powder
You can use a generic one if you want. If you don't have baby powder, try using these other absorbents:
- Corn flour.
- Salt.
Step 3. Remove the talcum powder from your clothes with a paper towel or spoon
Do it carefully, avoiding any spreading on other parts of the garment.
Step 4. Work some dishwashing detergent and water onto the stain with your thumb
When the detergent starts to lather, take an old toothbrush and start scrubbing the stain in circular motions.
Make sure you go to the attack of the stain on both sides of the fabric (inside the shirt and on the outside, for example)
Step 5. Wash the garment, alone, with laundry detergent
Follow the washing instructions on the label exactly.
When ready to dry, let the garment air dry. Using an extremely hot mechanical dryer can cause the grease stain to stick to your garment
Method 4 of 4: WD-40 or Lighter Fluid
Step 1. Instead of detergent, spray some WD-40 or lighter fluid on the dress
The WD-40 is effective in removing grease from surfaces, as well as liquid gas for lighters.
Test a tiny area of your garment before sticking the stain with WD-40 or lighter fluid. Better be sure
Step 2. Let the WD-40 or LPG sit on the garment for 20 minutes
Step 3. Rinse the WD-40 or LPG by soaking in hot water
Step 4. Wash the item of clothing by itself with detergent
For washing, carefully follow the instructions on the label.
