Water taps for outdoor use can easily get damaged over time. Fortunately, replacing an outdoor faucet is a simple task to complete.
Steps
Step 1. Close the main water supply valve of the house
Step 2. Spray lubricant where the faucet connects to the pipeline
The lubricant will help remove any rust that may have formed around the thread.
Step 3. Open the tap completely to let the water run out
Step 4. Place a socket wrench on the water pipe and another on the faucet
Step 5. With your non-dominant hand, hold the key on the water pipe so that it is stationary
At the same time, turn the spanner connected to the tap slightly counterclockwise until it is loosened.
Step 6. Once loosened, unscrew the faucet counterclockwise using your hands
Step 7. Run the threads over the pipe with a stiff bristle brush to remove the remnants of rust and debris
Step 8. Wrap two or three layers of Teflon tape around the threads clockwise
The Teflon tape seals the joints to ensure that there are no water leaks.
Step 9. Go to a hardware store and take the old faucet with you
Buy a new faucet that has the same characteristics as the old one.
Step 10. Screw the new tap into the pipe by hand in a clockwise direction until it is snug
Step 11. Place a socket wrench on the water pipe and another on the faucet, as before
Step 12. Tighten the wrench on the faucet clockwise until the connection is secure and the faucet is oriented correctly
Step 13. Open the main water supply valve
Step 14. Open the new faucet and check for leaks
Advice
- The main water supply valve of the house is usually placed where the water pipe enters the house from the outside. If you follow the pipes backwards, starting from the external tap to the point where they enter the house, you will find the valve.
- To prevent your outdoor faucet from freezing in the winter, dry it completely and turn off its water supply (you can find the relevant valve by following the pipe).
