Vicks VapoRub is a classic over-the-counter balsamic ointment commonly used to combat symptoms associated with cough, cold, muscle and joint pain. Applying Vicks VapoRub is easy, but it's important to pinpoint the right spots. It should also be considered that this ointment does not allow you to treat colds or flu: it only helps to relieve their symptoms. However, if these persist for more than two weeks, see your doctor.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Apply Vicks VapoRub to Fight Cough
Step 1. Massage Vicks VapoRub between your palms
Pick up a small amount of product with one hand, then massage it between your palms, spreading it well over the entire surface.
Massaging the palms together has two benefits: in addition to warming the product, this procedure makes it more pleasant to apply
Step 2. Apply VapoRub to neck and chest
Massage it thoroughly into the skin, covering the entire area. Continue to smear it until you create a thin layer.
Step 3. Wear clothing that leaves the neck and chest area uncovered
Using loose clothing with a soft fall allows you to better inhale it through your nose and mouth. This optimizes the effects of the ointment and allows it to act sooner.
Step 4. Repeat the application of VapoRub up to 3 times a day
As it goes away later in the day, you can reapply it. To avoid irritating the skin, distribute the applications so that several hours pass between each use. It should not be applied to the neck and chest more than 3 times a day.
- VapoRub should never be given to children under 2 years of age.
- Discontinue use if skin irritation occurs.
- Seek medical attention if symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks.
Step 5. Do not apply VapoRub under the nose
Since it contains a chemical called camphor, absorbing it through mucous membranes or ingesting it can be toxic. While it is commonly applied under the nose, it should never be used in this way.
Method 2 of 2: Using Vicks VapoRub to Relieve Muscle and Joint Pain
Step 1. Rub Vicks VapoRub between your hands
Take a small amount of product with one hand and massage it between the palms creating an even layer.
Rubbing the palms allows you to warm the VapoRub
Step 2. Massage your hands on the painful area
Examine the pain you are experiencing, then pinpoint the muscle or joint that is affected. The warm feeling of VapoRub helps relieve discomfort. Massage it thoroughly into the skin until it covers the entire muscle or joint.
Step 3. Repeat the application 3-4 times a day
As it is rubbed off of clothing or evaporates, the ointment can be reapplied to the affected area. Distribute applications so that several hours pass between uses. Do not repeat more than 3-4 applications a day, otherwise you risk irritating the skin.
If you notice a rash or skin irritation, stop using it immediately
Advice
- VapoRub does not cause hair growth.
- VapoRub does not reduce abdominal fat.
- VapoRub is not a nasal decongestant. The intense menthol smell it gives off deceives the brain, leading one to think that the nose is free.
- So far, no scientific evidence has shown that applying VapoRub to the feet relieves cold or flu symptoms.
Warnings
- VapoRub should not be given to children under 2 years of age.
- Discontinue use if skin irritation occurs.
- If it gets in the eye it can cause permanent damage to the cornea, so avoid applying it around the eyes.
